It's Official!
Fall has arrived. I feel especially lucky to live where I do this time of year —a place where autumn rolls in and offers crisp air and changing foliage. And while I thoroughly enjoyed devouring a bunch of books at the beach this summer, there’s something extra special about pairing a novel with a comfy sweater and a hot beverage—becoming totally engulfed in stories that warm the heart and get me thinking deep thoughts. October at Audible is a great time to pick up a new book club selection (yay, Reese!), celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, and get into a Halloween state-of-mind with the scarily brilliant Robert McCammon.Happy Listening!

Historia
When Rosie and Penn and their four boys welcome the newest member of their family, no one is surprised it's another baby boy. At least their large, loving, chaotic family knows what to expect. But Claude is not like his brothers. One day he puts on a dress and refuses to take it off. He wants to bring a purse to kindergarten. He wants hair long enough to sit on. When he grows up, Claude says, he wants to be a girl.

Check out the new pick from Reese's Book Club x Hello Sunshine on Audible
Whether or not you're already someone who picks up every audiobook Reese recommends, I highly recommend that you check out her latest pick, This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel. As a fan of contemporary fiction, listening to this one ticks so many boxes for me: well-developed and believable characters and a story that hits on universal themes found in so many family dramas (fictional and otherwise). There's also a distinctly modern twist that rings equally true to life and adds to that sense of this family being a genuine expression of everyday people. You can't help but identify with them, even if you think you never would.

Historia
Seven-year-old Chula and her older sister, Cassandra, enjoy carefree lives thanks to their gated community in Bogotá, but the threat of kidnappings, car bombs, and assassinations hover just outside the neighborhood walls, where the godlike drug lord Pablo Escobar continues to elude authorities and capture the attention of the nation. When their mother hires Petrona, a live-in-maid from the city's guerrilla-occupied slum, Chula makes it her mission to understand Petrona's mysterious ways.

Immerse yourself in Hispanic culture
This profoundly personal list put together by my fellow Audible editor Aaron includes fiction and nonfiction, literary hard-hitters like Paulo Coelho, and debut authors like (my new favorite) Ingrid Rojas Contreras. From Mexico City to Harlem and Barcelona to Bogotá, these distinct and diverse Lantinx authors offer up stories of our shared human experience through a cultural lens that illuminates voices we can all enjoy discovering, recognizing, celebrating, and listening to.

Historia
It's 1934. Businesses went under by the hundreds, debt and foreclosures boomed, and breadlines grew in many American cities. In the midst of this misery, some folks explored unscrupulous ways to make money. Angel-faced John Partlow and carnival huckster Ginger LaFrance are among the worst of this lot. Joining together they leave their small-time confidence scams behind to attempt an elaborate kidnapping-for-ransom scheme in New Orleans.

Too much violence for me.

A supernatural crime thriller with literary chops
I must admit that what first caught my eye about The Listener was the title. As an Audible editor, I talk to a lot of listeners (like you) and am also a big listener, myself. But author Robert McCammon is not referring to our kind of listening. In this creepy, realistic, yet otherworldly tale, vocal apparitions reveal the unspoken thoughts behind some truly disturbing, even terrifying, events. So, if you like your fiction with exceptional writing, a Depression-era setting, and stellar narration, along with a healthy dose of horror and grit—this genre-bending thrill ride is for you. Happy Halloween season!
