I can't
take it anymore. Every time I get in my car or gear up for my evening constitutional, I can’t seem to find the right thing to listen to. I’ve been working on goals like 30+ minutes of exercise every day, and in my efforts to end the year strong, I sometimes feel almost too on-task. I’m now realizing that rather than trying to find the perfect self improvement guide to listen to, I really just need a good story to get lost in. And what better place to discover ways of getting out of myself than by diving into some great fiction? This month, I can find a whole host of listens that satisfy that
I need a good story to get lost initch in collections that celebrate South Asian Heritage and Native American Heritage. These newly curated lists offer up classic and contemporary novels—some new to me and some I read long-ago. Both collections are valuable resources for discovering a next-up listen for anyone looking to expand their Audible repertoire (and for folks like me who rely on the power of storytelling to get through life’s little challenges).
Happy Listening!

Historia
When the Dickenson clan sits down for Thanksgiving dinner in 2016, it is the last holiday where their tight-knit family will ever be the same. Oldest brother Pete and his wife are expecting their first child. Youngest sibling Sophie is too busy running her restaurant. The Little Plum, to bother with any kind of social life. And middle child Charlie’s happy, uncomplicated life as a midwestern science professor is upended when his wife Annette is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Knowing this will be her last Thanksgiving, Annette asks Sophie to look after Charlie after she’s gone.

The Holidays are Coming!
I’m doing an experiment this year. I’m forcing myself to drive to the mall, walk around, and get into holiday shopping mode—before Thanksgiving. Why? Because I’ve skipped this shopping experience in recent years, and yes, it’s left me a little out of sorts. I may not end up buying anything, but I’m determined to take in at least one more dose of retail holiday excess before decade’s end. Who knows what shopping will look like in 2020 and beyond?
Even though this all has little to do with the story of You Can Thank Me Later, I’ve designated this my go-to holiday-spirit-inducing listen. It’s family drama at its best and there’s just something about it that sparks my desire to embrace the season. The cover art alone makes me happy, and narrator Lauren Fortgang’s performance is perfection. I feel like a part of the Dickenson family, closer to my own family, and inspired to go all-in this 2019 holiday season.
Next up, A Christmas Carol? Maybe. Just maybe.
Be Spirited

Sounds of South Asia
As a second generation South Asian American, Audible Editor Lavina has always taken pride in the rich storytelling culture she was born into. She grew up mesmerized by her grandmother’s heroic tales from ancient texts, the inspiring stories of starting over after the Partition, and the daily dramedy of living in joint families with aunts, uncles, and cousins galore. In celebration of the talented voices emerging from South Asia, Lavina has put together a collection of listens that capture not only the triumph of characters who overcame unbelievable adversity, but also the beauty of ordinary moments—the list includes her favorites from the region itself and the broader South Asian diaspora.

Native American Heritage
This ever-growing collection is dedicated to American Indian literature in its myriad shapes and forms. From customer favorites to editors' picks to top-selling listens, the list includes some of Audible’s best offerings in honor of Native American heritage. As I scrolled through each title, I discovered so many new-to-me writers and narrators. My library has become a much better place by adding these radiant voices that speak to the breadth of the American Indian experience.

Historia
The author of the best seller Call Me by Your Name revisits its beguiling characters decades after their first meeting. In Find Me, Aciman shows us Elio’s father, Samuel, on a trip from Florence to Rome to visit Elio, who has become a gifted classical pianist. A chance encounter on the train with a beautiful young woman upends Sami’s plans and changes his life forever. Elio soon moves to Paris, where he, too, has a consequential affair, while Oliver, now a New England college professor with a family, finds himself contemplating a return trip across the Atlantic.

You may "know" Jenny Slate from her Netflix special, Stage Fright, as the creator of Marcel the Shell, or as the star of Obvious Child. But you don't really know Jenny Slate until you get bonked on the head by her absolutely singular writing style. To see the world through Jenny's eyes is to see it as though for the first time, shimmering with strangeness and possibility.

Historia
From one of Britain's most celebrated writers of color, Girl, Woman, Other is a magnificent portrayal of the intersections of identity and a moving and hopeful story of an interconnected group of black British women. Winner of the 2019 Booker Prize and short-listed for the Gordon Burn Prize, Girl, Woman, Other paints a vivid portrait of the state of post-Brexit Britain, as well as looking back to the legacy of Britain's colonial history in Africa and the Caribbean.
