Plot
The Poppy War follows Rin, a war orphan from Rooster Province who shocks everyone by acing the Keju, an Empire-wide test, and gaining admission to Sinegard, the most elite military school in Nikan. At Sinegard, Rin faces discrimination due to her background but discovers she possesses a talent for shamanism, an ancient and powerful art.
As Rin explores her newfound abilities with the help of an eccentric teacher and psychoactive substances, she learns that long-dormant gods are still alive. Meanwhile, tensions rise between the Nikara Empire and the Federation of Mugen, with the threat of a Third Poppy War looming on the horizon.
When the Mugen Federation invades Nikan, Rin joins the Cike, a unit of imperial assassins led by Altan, a fellow Speerly. The Cike engage in battles against the Mugenese forces, including a siege at Kurdalain. As the war escalates, Rin struggles to control her powers and witnesses devastating atrocities committed by the invading army.
In a desperate attempt to turn the tide of war, Rin fully embraces her connection to the Phoenix god. She unleashes devastating power on the Mugenese homeland, but at a terrible cost to her humanity. The novel concludes with Rin vowing revenge against the treacherous empress of Nikan, setting the stage for further conflict in the series.
