Plot
Fairy Tale features an unlikely hero, Charlie Reade, a 17-year-old high school student in small-town Illinois. While mourning the death of his mother and grappling with his father’s escalating drinking, Charlie takes on the responsibility of caring for his elderly neighbor, Howard Bowditch, and his dog, Radar. After Mr. Bowditch's death, Charlie inherits his house and a cassette tape revealing an incredible secret—in the backyard, a humble shed contains a portal to another world. With Radar's health failing, Charlie decides to enter this mysterious realm in search of a magical sundial that could save the dog’s life.
Upon entering the parallel world of Empis, Charlie encounters a cast of characters including Dora the shoemaker and exiled members of the Gallien royal family. He learns of a great evil known as Flight Killer that has cursed the land and its inhabitants. Charlie navigates to the city of Lilimar, where he finds the sundial and rejuvenates Radar. Their journey. however, takes a sudden perilous turn. Charlie is captured by undead “night soldiers” and forced to participate in a gladiatorial tournament called the Fair One.
During his captivity, Charlie discovers that his appearance is changing, with his hair and eyes turning blond and blue. Fellow inmates believe this marks him as their prophesied savior. Charlie escapes the tournament with the help of a warder named Pursey and reunites with his allies. They reveal that Flight Killer is actually Elden, the brother of Princess Leah, who opened an evil portal called the Deep Well out of revenge for past mistreatment.
Charlie leads a small group to confront Flight Killer before he can reopen the Deep Well. In a dramatic showdown, Leah finally accepts her brother's transformation and stabs him. Charlie then faces off against the evil entity Gogmagog, ultimately defeating it. With evil vanquished, Charlie proclaims Leah as the new queen before returning home with Radar. The story concludes with Charlie taking his father on one final trip to Empis before sealing the portal for good.
