• A Walk to Remember begins retrospectively with a prologue, which Nicholas Sparks wrote last. This is also a technique he used in his first published novel, The Notebook.

• The book's title was taken from an observation near its very end, referring to the character Jamie's walk down the aisle with her father on her wedding day: "In every way, a walk to remember."

• Nicholas Sparks was inspired to write the novel by his sister, Danielle Sparks Lewis, who died of cancer in June 2000. Parts of the story were based on her life, including how she was never popular at school and always carried a Bible with her, as well as her battle with a terminal disease.

• Danielle's husband proposed to her despite her illness, a real-life inspiration that was mirrored in the novel where Landon marries Jamie despite her leukemia.

Nicholas Charles Sparks (1965-) is a renowned American novelist, screenwriter, and film producer. All of his books—23 published novels and two nonfiction works to date—have achieved New York Times bestseller status, with global sales of more than 105 million copies in total and translations into more than 50 languages. He made his literary debut in 1996 with The Notebook, and soon cemented his reputation for writing fiction with a focus on love, faith, fate, and the depth of human emotion.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Sparks grew up as the middle child, flanked by an older brother, Michael, and a younger sister, Danielle, whose early death from cancer profoundly influenced his writing. He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track and field scholarship, majoring in business finance and graduating magna cum laude. He wrote several unpublished novels while working at various jobs before his breakthrough success with The Notebook.

Several of his novels, including A Walk to Remember and Message in a Bottle, have been adapted into major motion pictures, with Sparks serving as a producer on the film versions of The Choice and Safe Haven. In 2024, The Notebook, which had been made into a 2004 film, was adapted into a Broadway musical.

Sparks lives in rural North Carolina, a setting that often provides the backdrop for his stories, reflecting his deep connection to the region. He is the founder of The Nicholas Sparks Foundation, dedicated to providing educational opportunities to underprivileged youth.
