Summary
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George R. R. Martin includes three novellas that precede A Song of Ice and Fire. Set in Westeros, these stories unfold about 100 years before Game of Thrones. "The Hedge Knight," "The Sworn Sword," and "The Mystery Knight" follow Ser Duncan the Tall, known as "Dunk," and his squire, Egg, who is later revealed to be King Aegon V Targaryen. The collection depicts Westeros' feudal society and the power dynamics among the elite. Gary Gianni's illustrations accompany the text, reflecting medieval fantasy themes.
Plot
In the first novella, The Hedge Knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk, enters the Ashford tournament to honor his late mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree. Wearing his mentor’s armor, he takes on a squire named Egg, who is secretly Aegon Targaryen, a prince. At the tournament, Dunk defends a puppeteer from Prince Aerion Targaryen, resulting in his arrest. Dunk chooses trial by combat to prove his innocence, leading to a Trial of Seven against Aerion's allies. Dunk ultimately prevails, solidifying his resolve to continue as a hedge knight with Egg.
In The Sworn Sword, Dunk and Egg serve Ser Eustace Osgrey at Standfast amid a drought. A water supply conflict with Lady Rohanne Webber, known as the "Red Widow," tests their allegiances. Dunk seeks peace between the feuding parties by confronting past betrayals and romances. He defeats Ser Lucas Inchfield, facilitating peace. Eustace's marriage to Rohanne strengthens alliances, allowing Dunk and Egg to continue northward.
In the final story, The Mystery Knight, Dunk and Egg attend a wedding at Whitewalls Castle, where a dragon egg tournament draws Blackfyre supporters. Disguised as the "Gallows Knight," Dunk uncovers a plot to crown a Blackfyre claimant. After surviving an assassination attempt, Dunk exposes the conspiracy. With Bloodraven's intervention, the uprising is quashed. Dunk and Egg gain recognition, highlighting the complex loyalties of Westeros, as they prepare for future adventures. The dragon egg symbolizes ongoing tensions.
