MJ Harris wrote and performed Get the F*ck Out Your Own Way to inspire others to create the lives they want by empowering them to take control of their choices. In this Q&A, the multihyphenate creator and entrepreneur reveals why he chose to share his audiobook now and how he was able to craft his own best life by pushing past his mental blocks.

Rachael Xerri: You’re so popular online—I'm one of your Instagram followers, along with more than a million other folks. What made you want to write this audiobook and what do you hope listeners will learn from it? And what can they find that you haven’t shared on social media?

MJ Harris: I wrote this audiobook because I want people to experience the life of their dreams, rather than just settling for the life they are living. In this audiobook, I share with them my own story about the very personal experiences that taught me these lessons. I also share with listeners "how" to get out of their own way.

What are some of the most common reasons why people hold themselves back, and what are they missing out on when they do?

We hold ourselves back because we don't realize that we deserve to live the life of our dreams—it's our birthright! When we hold ourselves back, we literally deny ourselves access to desires of our heart, true happiness, and an overall great life.

Was there anything you yourself held yourself back from that you’ve since gotten to experience?

I held myself back from going after my goals when I didn't think I was smart or special enough. Once I got out of my own way—by pushing forward in spite of those irrational thoughts—I started my business, was able to quit the job I hated, and started having more fulfilling relationships.

I’ll admit that I first picked up your book in paperback—it was all I could get my hands on at the time—and from the first page, I could not wait to hear it in audio. Your voice is so distinct, I immediately felt like we were having a conversation. That was amplified once I heard the recording. As a listener and writer, I want to know: Did you write with narration in mind?

Yes, absolutely. I wanted a book that you could read or listen to and feel like we were having a direct conversation—like two friends on the sofa! This audiobook is the most intimate way to truly experience the powerful messages of this book.
