Cynt Marshall is currently one of the most influential executives in the US, having become the first Black female CEO in the history of the National Basketball Association in 2018. In her debut memoir You’ve Been Chosen, she reveals how her faith and determination allowed her to navigate significant adversity—including surviving domestic violence as a child and advanced stage colon cancer as an adult—to get to where she is today. Below, Marshall shares with us why she chose to tell her story now.

Audible: What made you want to tell your story now?

Cynt Marshall: For years, I’ve been asked to turn my cancer journal into a book. But it wasn’t until 2019 when literary agent Jan Miller reached out and convinced me that it was time to share my story with the world. I started with my cancer story versus my career story because so many people are touched by cancer and need support. Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I felt even more compelled to write about adversity, hope, and community.

Who did you write You've Been Chosen for?

I intended the book to be for people who are on a cancer journey, either their own or coming alongside someone else. The book actually reaches beyond my intent and speaks to those who are facing adversity of any kind. You’ve Been Chosen is meant to provide evidence of divine purpose and victory.

What is the number one lesson you hope listeners take away from your memoir?

Once you’ve been chosen to face the unexpected, God and good people ALWAYS show up!
