If you're new to everything Twilight and looking to find out more, you've come to the right place. We're going to walk you through everything you need to know about the popular series, from the setting to the characters to the storylines.
Where is Twilight set?
The Twilight Saga takes place in Forks, Washington. Some fans of Twilight may not know that Forks is a real town in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state. (The town's economy used to be fueled primarily by the timber industry, but since the release of the Twilight films, tourism in Forks has tripled.) Forks is one of the rainiest locations in the United States—which explains why Stephenie Meyer chose it as the perfect haven for Edward Cullen and his family, who happen to be vampires. Because vampires sparkle in the sunlight, the overcast weather is ideal for covering their identity. At the beginning of the series, Bella Swan moves to Forks to live with her father, Charlie, and attends Forks High School. (And yes, Forks High School is a real school in the town that you can see if you visit.)
What inspired the Twilight books?
Author Stephenie Meyer was inspired to write the first Twilight novel after having a particularly vivid dream in which an everyday teen girl and a sparkling, beautiful vampire with complex feelings for one another were having an intense conversation in a wooded meadow. And just like Meyer's dream, the Twilight Saga is a complicated love story of two people who are drawn to each other, in spite of the practical aspects of their lives that should drive them apart. Beyond a challenging romance, the novels explore the importance of family, the power of temptation, the meaning of right and wrong, and the fight between good and evil.
What is The Twilight Saga about?
The novels are told in the first person from Bella's point of view. The series starts when Bella moves to Forks to live with her father. On her first day at Forks High, she encounters a mysterious boy named Edward Cullen and finds herself inexplicably drawn to him. As she learns more about Edward, she discovers that he's a vampire, but he doesn't believe in hurting humans and survives off of animal blood. Bella and Edward fall in love, but their love story is complicated by the fact that he is a vampire and she's a human. A clan of vampires targets Bella, and she goes back to Arizona to stay with her mother and evade the vampires that want to drink her blood. But James, one of the vampires hunting her, is able to track her down and attacks her at a ballet studio. Thankfully, Edward and the rest of the Cullen family come to her rescue. The novel ends with Bella returning to Forks. (2020’s is a retelling of from the perspective of Edward Cullen.)
