Dr. M. Elen Deming is Professor and Head of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Between January 1993 and September 2008, she taught seminars in the history and theories of landscape architecture as well as design studios at the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY. Co-editor of Landscape Journal from 2002 with James F. Palmer (emeritus, SUNY ESF), Deming assumed the role of sole editor from 2006 to 2009. Chosen by the ASLA to receive a National Honor Award for Communications (2008) for its 25th anniversary, Landscape Journal is still the premier peer-reviewed journal in the field.
Deming’s current research is motivated by her teaching and editorial experience. Based on published work in the field, she and co-author Simon Swaffield have prepared a framework surveying the range of research strategies in the discipline of landscape architecture. Other ongoing work examines the impact of landscape imagery on urban design ideals in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She has published studies on artists’ representations of Central Park and landscape imagery in the British Garden Cities movement. She has also contributed to the definitive biography of Christopher Tunnard (eds. Jacques and Woudstra 2009).
