As a professional writer, I have wide-ranging interests and publications. I have been a science and environmental journalist, a newspaper and magazine editor, an investigative reporter, a writer and maker of documentary films, and for 30 years a university faculty member who led a science communication program. My published books—fiction, nonfiction, biography, screenplays—have been dictated by my own passions and concerns, including the endangered species crisis (A Common Fate); personal resilience in challenging times (Love Despite the Plague; An Indiana Private in the Civil War); and music-drama (Seeing Opera Anew; Verdi's Dream). I grew up in Connecticut, have degrees from Yale and the University of Oregon, and since 1975 have lived in western Oregon.
