I am about two thirds of the way done with this story and I can’t stand it. It’s not the plot, it’s the writing.
EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. OR. T..Show More »HING comes with a back-story. There is a description and explanation for EVERYTHING and it goes on and on and on…. It’s borderline a collection of short stories there are so many tangents. The watch on his wrist (a Timex he bought 20 years ago), the lamp in the table (a stained glass creation he used to love, now hates), the grocery clerk (the type of person you can trust), the pizza (not as greasy as the one from the other place) IT NEVER ENDS! I swear it’s 20% story and 80% endless, pointless describing.
It’s driving me crazy, there is so much USELESS detail that doesn’t move the story along!!!! There is “filling out the picture” and then there is “all show and no tell” …. I don’t even know what this is, it takes constant rambling into the stratosphere; it’s so full of clutter.
At this point, I have to say that it’s actually becoming quite funny. I’ll finish the book but I can’t imagine ever picking up another one by the same author.
I like how Lisa Unger seems to have more than a basic understanding of people and the emotions that everyone feels and also, the world around her. It ..Show More »is why I continued with her books after listening to the first. Her stories do have a tendency to start off slow, which at first turned me completely off. Then I understood. She lays the ground work for you to understand the character, so you can develop a genuine feeling for the story. This book was good. There are alot of different lives going on and at first I was going..' Wait..who?' But then you find that all of them are woven together somehow and it became less confusing. It may be helpful to listen to her book.. Fragile.. first because there are people here that I believe came from that book and there was this constant underlying thing I thought I should know about Jones and Maggie. So that might be helpful. I did enjoy it . The best part about about her books, as I have already stated is that she devolops wonderful characters. If you have never listened to her before you will see what i mean. I had never heard Nancy Linari narrate before and at the beginning couldn't get past the idea that her voice sounded, to me, like SIRI from the ipone. But she did well and I ended up liking her without being irritated and that also for me, is good. Still I kept the vision of SIRI every once and awhile. Believe this book is worth it and don't feel you would be disappointed.
