One question, a split-second decision, and Brian Darby lies dead on the kitchen floor. His wife, state police trooper Tessa Leoni, claims to have shot him in self-defense, and bears the bruises to back up her tale. For veteran detective D. D. Warren it should be an open-and-shut case. But where is their six-year-old daughter? As the homicide investigation ratchets into a frantic statewide search for a missing child, D. D. Warren must partner with former lover Bobby Dodge to break through the blue wall of police brotherhood, seeking to understand the inner workings of a trooper’s mind while also unearthing family secrets.

Keeps you guessing all the way through!

Justin and Libby Denbe have the kind of life you’d find in the pages of a glossy magazine: A beautiful 14-year-old daughter. A gorgeous brownstone on a tree-lined street in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. A great marriage, admired by all. A perfect life. When investigator Tessa Leone arrives at the crime scene in the foyer of the Denbes’ home, she finds scuff marks on the floor and a million tiny pieces of bright green Taser confetti. The family appears to have been abducted.

Wait for it to go on clearance!

No, the narrator's attempts to do the male voices were strained. They should have used a male to co-narrate given all the male parts. Her female voice..Show More »

And how far would they be willing to go?

So weird how the narrators voice grew into it.

It is so weird. When I started on this book I was less than impressed with the narrators. But the start intrigued me so I stuck with it.

Nicole Frank shouldn't have been able to survive the car accident, much less crawl up the steep ravine. Not in the dark, not in the rain, not with her injuries. But one thought allows her to defy the odds and flag down help: Vero.

    Terrible!

Not like most of Lisa Gardner's stuff. Story was all over the place and narration was not great. Don't waste your credit!

Compulsive, chilling and utterly unputdownable, this is award-winning best-seller Lisa Gardner writing at her outstanding best. My name is Nicky Frank. I'm in hospital after crashing my car. I am afraid. The only thing I can think about is Vero. I know I have to save her, but why couldn't I find her? She's just a little girl. The man standing in my hospital room tells me we are married, but there is no Vero. That six months ago I suffered a traumatic brain injury which caused changes to my personality.

    difficult to read

    Struggled to read, weak plot.
Would not recommend this book to others.
