I actually read my first Joanna Brady a week after I moved to Arizona, having foun..Show More »d it in the empty house I moved into, so I actually got to know my new state by reading about Sheriff Brady in Cochise County as well as one of Jance's other characters, Ali Reynolds, who supposedly lives in Sedona. The books are very accurate geographically. After reading my first two, I've listened to several Jance books at Audible, including some featuring Seattle's J.P. Beaumont. They all have both interesting stories and interesting protagonists whose lives change in interesting and believable ways over time. I do prefer her female protagonists, though, but maybe because I am female. Somehow, I missed Shoot Don't Shoot, although I read the later ones and had wondered how the widowed Joanna suddenly got a boyfriend. I found out listening to this book!

My only complaint is the irritating voice the narrator gives Joanna's daughter, Jenny. I always liked Jenny but the very odd and unflattering voice given to her by Ms. Huber was enough to make me dread it when she came into the story. The narration wasn't bad otherwise but if you want to hear good narration with a Jance book, listen to something with Karen Ziemba.

The story is a 5 star but Jenny's voice was so amazingly irritating that I gave it a 4. That's how bad it is.

This book tells the sad yet beautiful romance between a young Hispanic injured football player from Douglas and the ex cheerleader from Bisbee. Through her tragic murder, her family learns life lessons while Joanna tracks the killers and breaks up the smuggling ring the DEA has been trying to catch.

The narrato..Show More »r did an excellent job with the different voices and nuances to distinguish all the characters. I was disappointed to see she had not done many other Joanna Brady books - I will look for her narrations again. Timing at the end of the story was somewhat predicatble, but of course with a pregnant sheriff that is expected. Most of all I ended up really liking and disliking a lot of the characters, which is what you really want in a good virtuous/evil whodunnit. I highly recommend Dead Wrong, I kept looking for excuses to get in the car and drive around so I could hear more.

Hillary Huber and Erik Davies tag teamed their way through the book, but they don't have as much skill at presenting ..Show More »different voices as most of the audible performers, nor do they have the acting ability. Erik comes closest, leaving JP Beaumont only slightly wooden, and offering the typical Beau take on life. Hillary doesn't give Joanna Brady nearly as much spark as some other readers have in the past, and at times seems to be a little monotonal.

The story itself is adequate, but is not my favorite among the Brady and Beaumont books. Perhaps the next in the series is meant to carry on where this one left off, giving a more satisfactory result to the plot?
I like getting another update on the ongoing lives of both of these characters, but the connection between the two departments seemed a little forced. This story does build upon prior occurrences, but you don't need to have read those book(s) in order to fully understand things (however, it helps!).

Regarding the tag team readers, I've wondered how well this would work. In this case, it was nothing to write home about. Even though it's difficult for men to voice women characters, and vice versa, it's easier for most actor-readers to create a believable woman's voice. I prefer the books where a single performer does all the voices as opposed to the switch-back and forth system.

The wonderful part about audio, though, is that by the time I drove to and from work, squeezed in a few listens at breaks and lunch, and a little in the evening, I could finish the book in two days using the fast setting in the iPod.

The J.A. Jance books are my second-favorite for audio listening (first is the Rita Mae Brown library), but if my introduction had been this book, I might not have developed the deep fondness for the characters peopling her books. I have trouble remembering sometimes that all of them are imaginary...

This book is much better than FIRE and ICE, Yes, it was a Joanna Brady book with J P Beaumont. I didn't think it was up to par to the way I like to think a Joanna Brady book should be. Though life is full of changes, I wish that Frank Montoya was still with Joanna as her second in command. It's like catching up with the family.

As for the narrator, I personally wouldn't have picked Hillary Huber either. Her voice is a bit grating, but she is better than a few of the narrators I truly dislike and becuse of them, I will not listen to a book by a favorite author because of the narrator. There are many better narrators. Susan Ericksen would be my top pick, but she can't do all of the books we like to listen too.

Cassandra Campbell, Carrington McDuffie, Katherine Kellergen, Kate Reading, Susie Breck, and Barbara Rosenblatt are few of the narrators that come to my mind. I am sure there are a few others that I can't think of right now.

The problem is, it's not up to to the author or us who reads the books, it's up to the publishers. The fine ladies I just mentioned, may not be able to do it, or the publisher and recording companies do not want to put out the big bucks.
