This book is the first in the game warden John Marlin series. I have listened to much worse, but there are too many really good mystery/thrillers out..Show More » there to waste time on this. The novel was funny at times. The narration was excellent.
This book almost lost a star because of a few scenes in the book - one of which was a takeoff of a famous scene from The Godfather. There was a lot ..Show More »going on in Blanco County - hunters being harassed, people getting killed, explosions, sheriff deputy being held hostage, romance - just to name a few at the beginning of this year's deer season, so much in fact that the game warden got pulled into helping the police figure out what's going on. Besides those few scenes I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to listening to another one.
The book and narration was very below my interest and quality. I kept falling asleep during it, and it took me several days to get through. The voice..Show More » inflections were interesting, but the southern accent (Texas) with overkill pronunciation of each word almost impeccable. The book context was boring and hard to follow due to jumping around.
I hope some enjoy this book, but my opinion is if there is a sample button, do the sample listening, don't buy first ... I wasn't aware on many there is a sample button.
Rehder's books are always a fun ride with his large cast of crazies who never fail to entertain. Hog Heaven is no different. I almost didn't download ..Show More »this book though because the narrator is new to the series, and I like my John Marlins to sound like John Marlin from Blanco Co., Texas. I'm not sure where this Marlin is from but it's not anywhere near Texas. There is very little distinction between Marlin, Phil, Red, Billy Don, Bobby Garza, Bill Tatum, or even Nicole...except for the chick from Russia. She didn't sound Russian, but she didn't sound Texan, either...nor did any of the others. Robert King Ross killed this book for me. I won't buy another that he voices.
Thanks to Ben Rehder for continuing the Blanco Co mystery series. Hilarious and engaging. The narrator however ruined the story for me. He tries uns..Show More »uccessfully for a Texas drawl and it is distracting and tedious and prevented me from getting beyond the 2nd chapter. If you like Ben Rehder, you might just want to read the ones narrated by Robert King Ross.
Got hooked on series when Jonathan Davis was the reader. The current reader, RK Ross, just does accents. Davis brought characters to life. This bo..Show More »ok another fun story from Rehder. All the fun and nuance ruined and lost by the reader.
Love seeing arrowheads laying on the ground., enjoy the rural visit, some of these characters remind me of my brother's cowboy friends and there is a ..Show More »mystery to solve. All these made for a fine story telling weekend. I rated it a 3 because I don't think many listeners will enjoy it the way I did.
