I am a confirmed fan of the Wheel of Time series. It is easy to read, though the plots and subplots are challenging to follow. I read this prequel a..Show More »fter finishing Book 7, and really enjoyed it. This "prequel" is really a vehicle to develop the characters of Lan, Moiraine and Siuan. Since the mystery concerning these characters and the reasons for their quest to find the Dragon Reborn helped make the first three or four volumes more interesting, I recommend a new reader read at least the first three volumes before reading this book. Jordan's prose sounds excellent when read. The readers are talented and, as a result, this is one book that might be more entertaining to listen to than to read.
I am writing this review on the first of this series because as you consider beginning a multibook series you'll be wondering if the commitment is wor..Show More »th it. After having listened to all of the books now available on Audible (10 or 11 and the story is still not over) I am telling you to GO FOR IT. It took a several chapters to get my bearings with the material, but after that I was hooked in a terribly engrossing world of fantasy that I would never have thought would interest me. Some other reviewers have panned the narrators, and maybe with the first book they hadn't yet found their bearing either, but throughout the series they are outstanding in my opinion. I couldn't get enough of this story. I'm thankful that I came to it late, when there were already more than 10 books to enjoy. I admit that I have expected the author to wrap up this saga before now, but in reality I am thankful that he kept the characters and their world alive. I recommend this series with no reservations.
I am overjoyed to find audible choose to carry this Unabridged series. It is pretty much the only place anywhere you can find this extraordinary Unab..Show More »ridged audio series. The abridged version of this series is horrible; however this version is a true and rare audio gem. I have listened to literally a few hundred audio books in my life, most of which were either sci-fi/ fantasy and this series stands out as one of the best I've heard. It has exquisite readers both Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are among the best audio readers I've ever heard. As anyone who has heard audio can probably relate to, the quality of the reader is vital to the experience of the book and these are simple two of the best in the business. They capture the characters perfectly and draw you in like few other readers can. Another great and fairly unique thing this audio reading does is when the books comes from the perspective of a female character Kate gives you the female voice to match, where as if you are in the head of a male character Michael reads to give you that male feel. This makes a big difference in the whole experience and how much the reading brings the character to life and draws you into their books world. Speaking of which, Robert Jordan's WOT world is one of the most vivid, complex and original world I have experienced in fantasy. The world's complexity continues to grow throughout the huge epic series. It makes you want to know what is going on in different lands almost as much as what is happening with different characters. In the first half of this series each book is better then the one before as the main characters, the world and the adventure expands. If you get a chance, please request that audible carry the rest of this Unabridged series. As of now they carry book one (The Eye of the World) and two (The Great Hunt). I guess that's about it. Enjoy, I hope you have as much fun with it as I did.
An outstanding novel in the Wheel of Time series!!
The Dragon Reborn is captivating from beginning to end! Robert Jordan does a wonderful job bringing many elements together at the end of this novel, a..Show More »nd producing a very climatic ending. Though some might argue otherwise, the plot is moderately convoluted and will keep most readers riveted until the last page. It is well worth the listening!
Great development of Perrin and a decent amount of Mat, this novel stands out as the most emotional and most ecstatic novel in the series. This turn ..Show More »in the series is the most engaging and enjoyable. I have listened to it 4 times now and each time experience a tightening in my throat when...well better not spoil it. You will not regret this one!
Possibly the best so far if your following the series. The "Great Hunt" a close second. No matter how they review you cannot pick up this book in th..Show More »e middle. If you've finished 1 thru 4 you should read "New Spring" before you do this one. Much insight and a real good story. In this one people are gone you would never have expected to be gone. Rand is slowly becoming someone you'd never recoginize from the first book. I just wish audible would not offer 9 out of 10 books in a series and leave out #5 for so long. The average member is not looking that far ahead when he/she starts out.
I've been waiting for this book a long time.
This is it! Lord of Chaos is finally out in Unabridged format!
Jordan/WoT literati argue about their favorite scene or the best part of ..Show More »the series. Ever since this book was published the battle at the wells has ranked near the top. This book and the two before it are Jordan at his best, his most innovative and balanced. I highly recommend the series (make sure you start with book one).
As for the audiobook... Michael Kramer and Kate Reading have been doing the narration for all 8 unabridged editions so far and they do a very good job of it. The only part of the narrations that bugs me in the slightest is Kramer's portrayal of Gawyn. How come Gawyn has a Brit accent and Elayne and the Emond's Fielders have normal accents? They're all from Andor... Anyway, very good production quality; engrossing story; able to fit on an iPod. What more could you ask for?
I agree with the previous reviews that this was a good story linking great ones, but the wonderful narration by Kate Reading and Michael Kramer makes ..Show More »it as riveting as all the others. The narrators provide nuances to the numerous characters that is a wonder to listen to.
You are reading the best epic fantasy series there is. period. It may take a while to get into it but you will. There are 2600 plus characters but don..Show More »'t get scared teenagers read this every day. You will know these peoples as "friends" and "enemies" and like your own family. Read by the dynamic duo of recitation kate reading and michael kramer... they pull it all together .. I switch genres just to listen to them... It [the series] is really one huge wonderful story broken into 14 too short books that nobody wants to see ended..I can not express how good these books are. I have started 16 different friends reading TWoT and they are all addicted. You think that maybe the books are enchanted some how??? If fantasy is your genre you have arrived....... paul t.
This is the worst quality of the Wheel of Time audio books I have encountered. The narrators are understandable, but significantly less audio quality..Show More » than previous book. This was done by McMillan Publishers and cheaply. Audio Renaissance was much better. Now I understand the message in the beginning of the previous book about using the same narrators for continuity. Notable drop in quality from that book. The parts have 90 chapters about 6-7 minutes long. There is an audible and annoying pause between them. you can also hear what must be the spacing between CDs as words are repeated.
I loved the first 7 books of this series, and then felt let down by the next three. I kept thinking to myself please just get me to the last battle! A..Show More »nd then book 11 came, I almost didn't get this book, I didn't know if I had anymore to give to this series. Well I am so glad I did get this one, it restored my love in the wheel-of-time series. It returned to the core party, it tied off loss ends, and made a very good start at getting us to the final battle. I felt the urgency growing!
I will not give away anything, however I must say there is one very emontional part that was written to tug at the heart strings, and it did, I wanted to join the golden crain and stand by it in the last battle!
If you have read the last 10 books, you must, must get this one! If you are thinking of starting a new series with lot of life I can recommend this one now with no hesitation.
Usually I wouldn't write a review before I had finished a book, but I just can't help myself... I'm sure that you hard core WoT fans out there won't ..Show More »need any further encouragement to purchase this one, but for anyone who does... Get it, now! :-) Seriously, it's good. Perhaps I'm just not as perceptive as I ought to be, but I've not yet noticed much difference from the quality that I'd expect of a book in this amazing series. So far, I think that Brandon Sanderson has stayed true to the characters that RJ created, and I think his style just works for this series. Needless to say, I am thoroughly enjoying this audiobook so far. I've already noticed quite a few plot lines moving forward and am learning answers to questions that I've really been waiting to find out about. I'd like to thank Mr. Sanderson for his wonderful work in continuing this series, Robert Jordan for caring enough about his fans to leave behind enough content for Brandon to work with, and of course, his wife Harriet for making a great choice of whom to continue his work. Very respectfully, Dominique.
This was a solid and action packed listen. As usual, Michael and Kate do an excellent job with the read. If Rand and Egwene are the primary characte..Show More »rs in this series, they have only brief appearances in Towers of Midnight. Perrin and Mat's stories finally get moving and are almost resolved. I would say that anything unpredictable occurs in those story lines, but they are satisfying nonetheless. The flow and story is so tight I actually felt this book ended too abruptly. However, I look forward to the conclusion coming in the next book.
All I mean is that the prologue is included in the book - which is going to be released in about 2 hours - so if you're getting that, there's (probabl..Show More »y) no reason to also get this. I happily paid $2 for this before the book was released because...I'm deeply invested in Jordan's story, LOVE what Sanderson has been doing with it, and truly enjoy listening to these two narrators who have been here since book 1. I am sooooo excited to start listening to the actual book tomorrow!!!!!
I pasted what I had for this review in Word, and it was 4 full pages, and still not done, so I decided to shorten it...
While this series is ..Show More »one of my favorites, it's not one I recommend to everyone. Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series is a long journey, both wonderful and painful, that I had to listen to twice before I could truly appreciate it's coherent beauty. While most of the books I couldn't put down, a couple got quite long, and all tend to have A LOT of detail - from what people are wearing to what everyone is thinking about every facet of what they're about to do...
Robert Jordan passed away, before completing the series. Mr. Jordan's wife then made the two best decisions possible for the series, given the heartbreaking loss of her husband:
1. Ask Brandon Sanderson to complete the series 2. Do it in three books instead of one
What Brandon Sanderson did with completing Robert Jordan's series, was the work of a true master. Mr. Sanderson is not just a great writer, he truly loves this series. You can see it in his work - he knows and understands each of the characters - and is emotionally attached to them as Jordan was, and as I am. I mean no disrespect to Robert Jordan when I say that Brandon Sanderson channeling Robert Jordan is as good as, if not better, than Robert Jordan alone.
After 20+ years of marching toward the final battle, as confident as I was that Mr. Jordan had this story done right, I was honestly prepared to be at least a little disappointed, but I was not. These last three books were awesome, and I feel this part of my life (yes, I mean this series) is complete. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Jordan, and Mr. Sanderson. Also, thanks to the narrators Kate Reading and Michael Kramer who were there for the whole series!
