This narrator is Jonathan McClain, when I really wanted Dick Hill.
For me, Dick Hill is Jack Reacher. I'm sure McClain is a nice guy, and he reads well enough, but he is not Dick Hill, and for me, that means he is not Jack Reacher. I'm not through the first chapter, but I really miss Dick Hill.

Two of the three books rolled out and purporting to fill the gap in the Jack Reacher series were already available on Audible read by Dick Hill. This..Show More » one read by Jonathan McClain is not totally awful but it is a pale imitation of the real thing. If you are a Jack Reacher fan from the previous books available in the Audible series, you will be sadly disappointed.

But the consistent thing about the Reacher novels and the thing that keeps me listening to them is the ultimate triumph of good over evil and Reacher's superhero exploits. Another satisfying listen.

I have listened to many of Lee Child's books with Jack Reacher, but I have to say this was my favorite to date. The story was seamless, very well tho..Show More »ught out, and very well written. All of the characters were believable and Child gave us some of his best ones yet. Dick Hill is a fantastic narrator, and did his usual great job. All-in-all a very exciting, "sit-on-the-edge of your seat" story, but with provocative human elements. I believe that Child is improving as an author, and it is noticeable in this book. This was my first read where Reacher is acting in an undercover capacity while working with another agency (not sure if he has any other stories where he does this.) He must infiltrate a very dangerous smuggling ring in an effort to fulfill two objectives: recover a kidnapped federal agent, and take care of some unfinished business of his own from an arrest-gone-wrong in his old days as an MP. Child brilliantly weaves this past story into the present one, and this makes for an even more compelling story. In this book we are given more insight to Reacher, the man, than any of his books I have read so far. As with most of Child's Jack Reacher stories, one doesn't have to have read any previous books to enjoy this one, so even if this would be your first Reacher novel, go for it! I highly recommend this listen!

I liked this book - I've read (and enjoyed) many of the other Lee Child Reacher novels, but this one seemed to make Jack Reacher more approachable and..Show More » human. He's the ethical and hard-ass he is in the other books, but the relationships with his mother and brother, her history, put Reacher's character in a context where I really liked him. In the earlier books I've read, he was always the "good guy" but not quite as whole a person. It's also a really good listen..

Set in an unnamed city in "the heartland" (later identified as Indiana), I found "One Shot" to be un-put-downable, even though I agree with the reviewer who was distracted by constant repetition of the line "Reacher said nothing" (or "character X said nothing, or "character Y said nothing," but mostly it's Reacher who says nothing).

Great villains and a fast-paced story that keeps you guessing. I gather they are making a movie of this one starring Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher (by coincidence, both Cruise and Reacher are between 5 and 7 feet tall).

I only discovered author Lee Child and this series about a year ago, when I picked up the CD of "Gone Tomorrow" at the library. Turned out to be one of those sit-in-the-car audiobooks that keeps you glued to the steering wheel waiting to see what happens next. I didn't care for "Killing Floor," the first in the series, but have gone through five of the more recent titles (including this one and the terrific "Bad Luck and Trouble") with lightning speed and fear I may be in danger of becoming a "Reacher creacher." Time for some heavy-duty classical history (Tacitus anyone?) as an antidote!

This Reacher story lacked much of the macho interplay that we have come to expect between our superhero and the cast of bad guys. But what was lacking..Show More » in the first 10 hours or so is more than made up for in a riveting final 90 minutes. I continue to be a fan of narrator Dick Hill but he went a bit overboard with his interpretation of Hobart. Injuries left Hobart unable to speak clearly and Hill did his voice so well that it was difficult, and sometimes impossible, to discern what he was saying on first listen. Other than that annoyance, Hill did his usual splendid job. I've reviewed all the Reacher novels in chronological order and this one doesn't differ from the rest. Escapism with a larger-than-life hero who doesn't take hostages. Violent good prevails over violent evil.

Bad Luck and Trouble sheds a lot of light on Reacher and what drives him. Sometimes he seems almost a two dimensional entity without any clear motiva..Show More »tion other than violence, and then you see the almost Taoist clarity with which he sees the world. If there were a grim reaper, Reacher could be his avatar on earth. He takes the admonition "do the right thing" from his mother (Enemy), and does it. The eye for an eye nature of his balancing the books for his brutally murdered comrades is justice at it's simplist. If he were to have a tatoo, it would say "Let God sort it out later", to paraphrase R. Lee Ermey. Great Book!

I have read all Reacher novels and have liked all of them to date. I wait for a new novel to be published every year and could not wait until this on..Show More »e was available.

This book started off ok but jumped the shark when reacher threw his hand into the political arena. I feel Lee Child wrote this novel to take a shot at the military and administration. Seems like a lot of setup for a lackluster and frustrating ending.

I gave this book four stars because I love the Reacher series and Lee Child and I'm glad there's another book. However . . . this novel is badly in ne..Show More »ed of editing. There are numerous interminable conversations that recap information we already know. I actually carried on conversations with other people while listening to parts of this book with one earbud in, just waiting for something to happen.

As usual, Reacher kicks the bad-guys around, and there are a couple of satisfying twists, and plenty of national and international intrigue. The evildoer is very evil, the stakes very high, and the conclusion ties up loose ends. But I get the sense that Child was just going through the motions, trying to keep a best-selling character alive and fill up a few hundred pages, without really feeling it. Usually I'm at the edge of my seat with the Reacher books. This time, I could have used a fast-forward function.

If you're new to Child and Reacher, pick one of the earlier books, like "The Killing Floor", to start with.

This book was a let down in many areas. Many of the things Reacher did were unbelievable, even for him. There were characters inserted here and there that didn't really fit and made the plot seem even more silly.

Even Dick Hill was unable to save Reacher. While it does seem he made a noble attempt, it was not possible. It made him sound even more preposterous.

What a wase of money and time!

You might think The Reacher character wou..Show More »ld be near the end, however Child has upped the anty one more time. I loved this one from start to finish. Worth Dying For has action from start to finish and has no filler in between. Dick Hill is the master of his craft and never so much as Reacher.

Here is the perfect chance to come on board! With 15 previous novels inspired by this Jack Reacher, you know this has got to be one interesting guy. Why now? Because The Affair is how it all got started (why nomad Jack likes his toothbrush). A brilliant idea by multi award winning author Lee Child; show the reader the etiology of the coffee guzzling, rapier witted, ex-military sleuth as he himself recalls,"I remember the date...the 11th of March 1997..." and thus begins the legend of Jack Reacher as he walks away from the Pentagon. As usual, lots of action, sharp humor, a colorful cast of characters, and a train that speeds through the one-diner town rattling more than the tracks.
