The switch between the usual Patterson violence intermingled with the unbelievability of a busy detective having 10 children AND a dying saintly wife ..Show More »PLUS helpful father/grandfather, then being sent an even saintlier au pair and still keep his act together, was just too much for this usually gullible listener to swallow.
I dislike background music/sound effects in any audible book but even though the sad scenes were so eloquently expressed, the soulful music intruded, particularly when the listener was immediately jolted into the next unreal vicious actions of the villains.
Part of Patterson's et all's successful writing strategy is to make you quickly turn the page at the end of each chapter to find out 'what happens next' The narrator paused before announcing each one, which made me feel he also found the discontinuity between action and family tragedy, hard to handle.
At the First Lady's funeral, a small group of armed men kidnap everyone in church, filled with celebrities. The kidnappers seem to have everyone extr..Show More »emely well-planned, which means Patterson's plot is just as well-planned. The detective-negotiator lead, Mike Bennett has to solve it all while he struggles with his own personal/family life issues. A great mix of family-values, pathos, and action make this an easy listen.
Narrators John Slattery and Reg Rogers are a great mix, with Slattery providing a style like many of the the well-read Ludlum series and Rogers providing good spice with Christopher Walken-sounding characters.
I have a hard time staying with a book that doesn't grab me in the first chapter. This is why I adore anything written by James Patterson, I wasn't f..Show More »amiliar with Mr Ledwidge but his writing only complemented Mr. Pattersons. Their new book "Run For Your Life" is no exception. From the moment we meet the villian til the absolutely hair rising ending, this book grabs you and doesn't let go. I've always preferred Alex Cross to any of his characters but now have a pretty big crush on Mike Bennett also. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this one.
Although I have read a fair amount of James Patterson's books, this is the first time I have listened to one. I really enjoy the genre that James Pat..Show More »terson writes in, and he is a master of this one.
But listening takes it to another level. One gets so much more caught up in the scenario that its hard to break out of it and carry on with mundane tasks. The two narrators were excellent, and the voice of the serial killer was so creepy, that when I heard a similar voice on a documentary program the other evening, I changed channels !
I enjoyed the normality of Michael Bennett's life in contrast to the one he has to face in his day to day job, and will certainly continue with the series.
It's one thing for you to give me an easy to follow story with good writing, but then you give me great narration to go with it? The cast did a bang u..Show More »p job. From work to the car ride back home I couldn't stop listening. I hope for more cases with Michael in the future.
I really loved listening to this book along with the other three books in the Detective MIchael Bennett series. The story and readers were excellent ..Show More »in all of them. This is one of my favorite series of books. This series is good to listen to in order because of the character and family situation development. Also because all the books are so good that you don't want to miss out.
Yes, loved all the others, this one was just weak, made detectives seem clueless. Felt like I was watching a clueless character in an bad 1980's horr..Show More »or film. The story line was great but the good guys just made way too many mistakes. And then the book just stopped.
James Patterson should be embarrassed to put his name to this book. I am an avid reader of his novels so consider myself a fair critic of his work. th..Show More »is would have to be the worst book I have ever had the misfortune to listen to. The family are too perfect and without giving anything away the storyline is so unbelievable I couldnt believe we were expected to stomach the things an experienced LAPD detective let his family do whilst in witness protection. I bought the book to read- couldnt get into it so stupidly bought the audiobook- worse mistake. Luckily it was heavily reduced - I now know why. Save your money and ask someone else what happens. Having said that I probably will give the next book a go to see if he is still insulting our intelligence. Listen at your own peril.
Great listen.... with multiple story lines..., interesting personalities....,suspense..., and of course familiar family involvement....... Bennett..Show More »'s twisted journey to solve a complicated crime came to a ABRUPT end thus ending the story.....what happened to the rest of the story...his ombudsman team....his adopted daughter......his sick grandfather....Mary Catherine ?????? I was left hanging...am I being set up for a sequel ???????. (Clever but maddening )
