Imagantive storyline, with solid plot twists . The narrator did a wonderful job with both pacing and building tension (she seemed to do well with all..Show More » the character roles while being true to the author's original concept. what I mean by that is that I have frequently fond that narrators interpret characters (especially female characters) that I would have viewed as strong, so that they sound like paranoid or weak-willed individuals who are waiting for a man to rescue them from their miserable life; and I just HATE it when that happens! :) Now for the one thing that irritated me abt the narrator - her voice uh... just went really weird wgen playing the main character under stress; i cant put my finger on it but it is like she drops vowels or something, and it makes the character sound as though severe stress either gives her a speech impedimen or turns her into a half-wit, and then when things calm down she snaps back to normal! VERY ODD especially when u consider the amazing job she does of narration regardless of the character's gender. I purchased the author's next book (Freak) immediately after writing this review and lfinished it in one sitting (i am back editing original review). I enjoy the author's character development and interaction between characters along with plot crescendo & diminuendo development - I feel that as she continues writing she will rapidly become VERY good (following the same well-worn path as one my fav authors of this genre, Harlan Coben).
This is the only book I have listened to from Jennifer Hillier. I didn't listen to the first and found unless I wanted more of the back story to some ..Show More »of the characters I didn't need to. It stood on it's own. The book was entertaining and overall it kept my interest but it was somewhat predictable. I had figured out half way thru who was helping the killer achieve what she was trying to achieve. I found it somewhat irritating that the woman behind bars, 'Abby', was involved in several different relationships, with different sexes, who would virtually risk their jobs because of wanting to please her. So that had me at the 'oh geez' once or twice. The narrator is OK. She did her best to perform the book just found the male characters grating on my nerves but essentially I find most female narrators giving me that same reaction. Was good. I don't have any desire to listen to the first book tho. That might say something. So perhaps if you are looking to get into a series, you should start there.
