A poor little girl tries to sell matchsticks on a bitter cold New Year's Eve, when most people are having a party inside where it’s warm and are eating good food. She must earn money for her starving family, but no one buys her matchsticks. So she uses the matches to get warm and has an incredible experience on the last evening of the year.

The youngest and prettiest of the Sea King's seven daughters yearns to become a human, to have a soul and come to live on land. She falls in love with a young prince after saving him from drowning. She seeks the help of a sea witch, who turns her fish tail into human legs. In return she surrenders her beautiful voice and becomes speechless. The poor mermaid must then struggle through many trials in order to win the love of the handsome prince.

He falls in love and experiences winter's transformation into spring.

It only thinks of what it will feel like when it is bigger, older, and wiser. One day, it is chopped down and made into a Christmas tree - and finds that it may be too late to experience anything.

A poor little hatchling, which is born into a duck flock, must endure a great deal of suffering. He gets bullied, yelled at, teased, and mocked, while at the same time he is dying, both from hunger and cold. He is close to being killed by a hunting dog and gets schooled by an arrogant cat who thinks it knows all about the world. But in the end, he discovers his proper place in life.

A healthy soldier comes upon an old witch and a hollow tree while on his way home from the war. Before long, he has acquired an old lighter and all the money he could want. Meanwhile, the beautiful princess of the small town has been locked up by her own parents. The soldier falls in love with her - but cannot find a way to win her. Thanks to some good friends he made with the witch's help, he ends up avoiding public execution and winning the princess' heart.
