These are short mysteries featuring US Grant during the Civil War. These previously published stories have appeared in a variety of book-length anthologies, and both on-line and print magazines. Each of the stories takes place prior to the first US Grant mystery novel, The Ambush of My Name.
Larian Elesir, a young recruit in the Citizens' Army, arrives at his first post. Eager to join the war effort, he is nonetheless nervous in his new environment and worried about setting a foot wrong. During his first day in camp, his new companions put him through his paces as they both learn who he is and teach him the basics he'll need to survive in his job in the army.
Larian's comrade-in-arms and friend, Jiles, received a family heirloom in the mail: a pendant from his deceased grandfather. Then he lost it during a night of liberty in Mirasol, a town near their Company's camp. Larian agrees to help Jiles find his lost heirloom. Their search brings them into the heart of Mirasol's underworld, where they encounter dangers they did not expect during a simple night of liberty.
Intelligence told the High Command that the Mar Tabban, arch enemies of the Citizens' Army, had moved into the territory garrisoned by Larian's Regiment. In response, the Regimental Commander sent the B company scouts, Larian's unit, out to investigate. On his first operational assignment, Larian has to overcome inexperience and his own fear and uncertainty if he wants to survive and get the information his Regiment needs to emerge victorious.
A young army recruit, recently graduated from the Martial Academy, returns home on leave to find his village attacked by brigands and his girl kidnapped. Confident in his swordsmanship and the fact that his is the side of virtue, he sets out on his own to rescue her. This is the tale of his rescue attempt. Will he succeed, or will he fall, leaving his girl to the ravages of of the brigands?
