Tammy, an analogy of the Genesis 38 story of Tamar and Judah, is set in rural Britton's Neck, 30 miles inland of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, during 1963, the heyday of tobacco farming, that was subsidized by the government. Poverty combined with constant criticism from her mother has caused Tammy to have obsessive compulsive disorder. She loves her job at B. C. Moore's & Sons in Marion and the arrangement she has with the bank in paying for her car, which she feels she must have - even if it means she must earn extra money by prostituting.
"A book to remember"
I just wanted a nice Thanksgiving dinner - all right, mainly the yeast rolls and the potato salad, perhaps some pie. Was that too much to ask for? Judging from the audience gathered outside it was far too much to ask. This is my story and my name is Madeline. I'm not your typical survivor. In fact, many would say I should have probably been one of the first to go, but here I am, chugging along, seizures and all. Zombies or not I'm determined I'm going to have Thanksgiving dinner.
In the beginning we had it all, lights, food, and heat when it was cold. My biggest worry was ignoring the noise from the coal mine just up from our house. Then greed caused a death. A momentary decision, a lie, brings one man to his knees. Then his family, and then the world. That death would spread like the waves in a disturbed pond, throughout our town, throughout our world. When will it stop? How far can it possibly go? This is my diary, the diary of how it all started to fall, of how the world ended.
