Samuel Davies (1723-1761) was an evangelist, Presbyterian minister, composer of hymns, and prolific author. Davies was one of the first Puritan preachers in Virginia, and one of earliest missionaries to slaves in the British colonies. Davies’ sermons were infused by eschatological fervor as he proclaimed the need for the liberation of the soul from the claws of sin. Sins like avarice, prodigality, evil diversions, vanity, sensuality, and popery had for 150 years afflicted the land, he complains....

With stirring imagery, he illustrates that not all who are ressurected in the final days of Christiandom will be saved; in fact, he believes many will then be sent to Hell. Here he counsels his followers how to prepare, so they do not rise up only to be cast down.

Samuel Davies was an academic, evangelist, Presbyterian minister and poet. He was one of the earliest missionaries to slaves in the British colonies, and a strong advocate for religious freedom. Davies’ sermon, ‘Jesus Christ, the Only Foundation’, was delivered on February 13, 1757. The sermon is based on Isaiah 28:16-17 and 1 Peter 2:4, 6, which interprets the original as a reference to Jesus Christ. Davies explains the phrase ‘foundation stone’ in great detail, by discussing its properties and its power as a house built upon a rock, in contrast to one built on sand.

Samuel Davies was an evagelist Purtian minister and speaker in the 1700s who spearheaded the cause of religious freedom within the colony of Virginia. Here is one of his most powerful speeches, condemming sin and praising the wisdom of the Christian God, delivered in his fiery method. Samuel Davies compares the Lord's supper to that of Passover. He goes on to discuss the traditions of Jews during Passover, to search their homes and remove all traces of leavened product, just as Christians must search their hearts and and purge any evil or wickedness from it. Only then, will they truly be pure enough to partake.
