Reigning CrossFit world champion Rich Froning is "the fittest man on Earth". He's fast, he's strong, and he's incredibly disciplined. But it takes more than physical strength to compete and win at an elite level. It takes incredible mental and spiritual toughness as well. And it is the precise balance of all three that makes Rich Froning a champion.
From wild and wacky to knee-slapping, laugh-out-loud fun, these humorous tales represent some of the best of recent seasons of the hit public radio series Selected Shorts. Comedian Wyatt Cenac gives a killer performance of Simon Rich’s hilarious tale of woe from the point of view of a condom in a young man’s wallet. Alec Baldwin gives a delightful over-the-top performance of James Thurber’s wonderfully silly classic tale of the day everybody in a small Ohio town thought the dam broke.
"Some very entertaining, some not"
Through Maria's Eyes is the based on the true fascinating story of how one Jewish woman was able to survive and indeed triumph during the darkest days of the Hungarian Holocaust. Gizella Kornfield's world collapsed overnight when, one day in March, 1944, her beautiful European city was invaded by the Nazis whose sole purpose was to eradicate as many Jews as possible before the war ended. Gizella assumed a false Christian identity and obtained employment as a maid in the home of an anti-Semitic family.

Rollie Waters is the smartest guy in any room. He knows all the angles, and he’s never fewer than two steps ahead of trouble - a skill he learned from the con-artist father, Dan, who raised him, though he hasn’t seen him in years. Rollie’s childhood was a mesh of perfectly believable lies stretched so thin that he barely knows who he is. It’s only when he’s working undercover as a Marine, inhabiting a false identity, that Rollie is comfortable in his own skin. After he’s yanked out of his latest assignment and tossed in the brig, he’s only partly surprised when the officials in charge mention one name: Dan Waters.
