Novela que relata una serie de sucesos cotidianos que tienen lugar en un poblado chiapaneco cercano a Guatamela, Balún-Canán. Oficio de tinieblas, considerada una obra maestra de la narrativa latinoamericana, está basada en el levantamiento de los chamulas de 1867 a 1870 en San Cristóbal, Chiapas, que culminó con la crucifixión de uno de ellos al proclamarlo como el Cristo indígena. Rosario Castellanos se sumerge en la historia y sus protagonistas para buscar entender las circunstancias que llevaron a un pueblo a tan desgarrador acontecimiento y lo recrea en un México cercano: el de la reforma agraria durante el gobierno de Lázaro Cárdenas.

En los cuatro relatos que conforman Álbum de familia, el lector no puede escapar a una prosa profunda e irónica al presenciar la lección de cocina de una recién casada, al participar en una reunión dominguera en que se plantean todo tipo de relaciones sexuales y sociales, al contemplar la ceguera de una madre a la anormalidad que ella misma propició en sus hijos y, por último, al asomarse a los mundos plagados de ira y envidia de ciertas damas intelectuales.
