In this fun, cozy, debut mystery, an antiques hunter investigates a suspicious death at an isolated English manor, embroiling her in the high-stakes world of tracking stolen artifacts.

What antique would you kill for?

Freya Lockwood is shocked when she learns that Arthur Crockleford, antiques dealer and her estranged mentor, has died under mysterious circumstances. She has spent the last twenty years avoiding her quaint English hometown, but when she receives a letter from Arthur asking her to investigate—sent just days before his death—Freya has no choice but to return to a life she had sworn to leave behind.

Joining forces with her eccentric Aunt Carole, Freya follows clues to an old manor house for an advertised antiques enthusiast’s weekend. But not all is as it seems. It’s clear to Freya that the antiques are all just poor reproductions, and her fellow guests are secretive and menacing. What is going on at this estate and how was Arthur involved? More importantly, can Freya and Carole discover the truth before the killer strikes again?

Good dialogue

Liked the multi generational protagonists, and the antiques as a theme. Hoping future books will feature European antiques.

Just a great suspense novel that moves along and entertains.

Good characters, entertaining, got me through a night when I was sick and couldn’t sleep, but helped the night to scoot on by. Subject matter was very interesting also, just what I needed.

Antique and mystery

I love old objects, antique shops and mysteries set in manors in the countryside. This book was kinda really up my alley. I immediately had to google wally bird, and now I am in love with them.

There were times I felt the writing was a little erratic, but I found the story captivating enough to ignore certain details, and the narration was excellent, even if the US accents proved to be a bit challenging. Overall, this was an enjoyable read, and I look forward to reading the next novel when it comes out.

Very enjoyable

What’s not to like? England, antiques, and murder! It’s a good thing England doesn’t really have murders at the rate they have books about murders. Though it would make my vacations there more interesting.

If a week character dies in the forest, do we need to care?

First novels…risky ventures. There was almost nothing about the characters or the story that was appealling. No trite posh British cliche is spared. Forshadowing done with a jackhammer. Atmosphere sparce or ignored. It doesnt build, it rolls off a shelf. Unlike the post book conversation, i have little interest in where the characters go next. The narator was adequate, but her South Carolina low country accent veered from Texas to Cockney

Really fun

Loved this book. All the cleverness and suspense of a cozy mystery, plus a wildly amusing pair of main characters who infused needed humor into the story. Reall great first book, very much hoping there will be more to come
