“In Britney Spears’s memoir, she’s stronger than ever.” —The New York Times

Over 2 million copies sold of the “moving” (Time), “powerful” (Los Angeles Times), “radiant” (The New York Times), “poignant” (Vogue) #1 New York Times bestseller. The Woman in Me is a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope.

In June 2021, the whole world was listening as Britney Spears spoke in open court. The impact of sharing her voice—her truth—was undeniable, and it changed the course of her life and the lives of countless others. The Woman in Me reveals for the first time her incredible journey—and the strength at the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history.

Written with remarkable candor and humor, Spears’s groundbreaking book illuminates the enduring power of music and love—and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms, at last.

IN HER OWN WORDS, BRITNEY SPEARS RECLAIMS HER POWER WITH THE WOMAN IN ME

In her recently released essay collection Black Friend, comedian and satirical talk show host Ziwe says it best regarding Britney Spears's infamous conservatorship: "What does it say about a society when one of its most famous women is held captive in plain sight as a result of our collective objectification and dehumanization?" The delicate question has been the subject of much discussion, from the New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears to the Hulu-hosted TMZ Investigates: Britney Spears: The Price of Freedom and more.

With the release of her memoir, Spears finally weighs in on her own life, and she sets the record straight about everything from her days of early fame to life under conservatorship control, and all the ups and downs in between. Fans everywhere have been waiting for Britney’s take, and finally, at long last, it is here. The emotion in Britney’s voice is palpable as she reads the introduction herself, telling listeners that writing her story has been so "exciting and heart-wrenching" that she decided against narrating the entire work.

Instead, Spears turns over the mic to award-winning performer Michelle Williams who makes her audiobook debut and brings her incredible acting chops to the challenge of depicting one of America’s most famous women. Her narration is clear and calming, bringing a sense of serenity to Spears's incredible story. No stranger to portraying complexity, Williams is known for the depth, gravitas, and sensitivity she brings to her roles including her expert performances in My Week with Marilyn, Brokeback Mountain, and Shutter Island.

Critic reviews

"Actor Michelle Williams delivers a tell-all memoir from Britney Spears. As a child star on “The Mickey Mouse Club” and a teenage pop star, Spears always felt that other people were making decisions for her and was constantly tempted to quit show business. Williams uses a direct approach to voice Spears’s feelings, and these passages carry even more weight in this audiobook than the dramatic events of her life. Some key moments are already public knowledge, but Williams’s narration gives added perspective on the trauma, stress, and pressure Spears endured for so many years. Rarer joyful moments are delivered with warmth, reminding listeners that Spears is more than the spectacle the media has made her out to be."
"...narrator Williams’s gentle Southern drawl and slight vocal fry make this gripping memoir an unputdownable must-listen." (Elizabeth Gabriel)

Britney’s book is beautifully written by herself with a mixture of formal, deep introspection, as well as humorous light hearted conversational style. Britney invites you in and shares her heart in a way she has never done before. Beyond the icon there’s a beautiful human soul that has endured so much and keep surviving and thriving.

Beautifully written, it humanizes an icon

As for someone that can relate to Britney, I am fortunate that my family does not have the funding to do half of what Britney’s parents did to her. Much of how her family treats her is exactly how my family does to me. Controlling and manipulating. I applaud you, Britney for being able to find your strength and fight for yourself. You give me hope. I’m proud of you.

Other than the purpose of the book, Michelle read it well.

I listened to this all at once and was just uncontrollably sobbing the entire time. I am so proud of Britney and her strength is so admirable and encouraging. It’s disheartening to hear how awful she has had it especially when I grew up with her music and put her on a pedestal in my mind where I thought her life was the best. Even during the time the media said she “spiraled”, since I was young, I never knew the full gravity of the situation until #freebritney. I enjoy how she has come to terms with her family in a healthy way where she can acknowledge their abuse and distance herself while also maturely not slandering them in her book. Especially concerning her sister. She will always be one of my favorite musicians and childhood role models. I hope she has peace and happiness currently, God knows she deserves it.

I want to give her a hug

After reading this book my take away is that Britney has always been misunderstood and overlooked by the people who controlled her every move. This book is a must read and I truly enjoyed it.

Misunderstood

I wasn’t even a huge Brittany fan when I was young. But I did want to hear her side of how things went since I had seen all of the ignorant new stories over the years, I knew there was more to her story. I’m so glad I listened.

Give her a chance to tell her story
