#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs’s twenty-second high-stakes thriller! In this “attention-grabbing” (Booklist) narrative, forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan follows a series of bizarre disappearances on the islands of Turks and Caicos and enters a sinister labyrinth in which a new technology may wreak worldwide havoc.

Called in to examine what is left of a person thought to have been struck by lightning, Tempe traces an unusual tattoo to its source and is soon embroiled in something much larger. Young men—tourists—have been disappearing on the islands of Turks and Caicos. Seven years earlier, the first victim was found in a strange location with his left hand hacked off; subsequently, two other visitors vanished without a trace. But recently, tantalizing leads have emerged…

Maddeningly, the victims seem to have nothing in common—other than the odd places where their bodies turn up, and the fact that none seems likely to have been involved in criminal activity. Do these attacks have something to do with the islands’ culture of gang violence? Tempe isn’t so sure—but she soon discovers evidence that what’s at stake may have global significance, and the sound of a ticking clock grows menacingly loud. Then Tempe herself becomes a target…

Critic reviews

"Linda Emond masterfully portrays Temperance Brennan in the latest Reichs novel. Emond captures the astute forensic anthropologist in a calm tone. She deftly navigates the plethora of accents, adding to the sense of place in this international police procedural. The story begins with an unexpected storm hitting the Montreal area as Tempe and her beau, Ryan, are on the water, watching a fireworks display. As a result of the storm, Tempe is pulled into a possible lightning-strike case. She is introduced to Detective Musgrove from Turks and Caicos, who comes to identify the body. Tempe is told about an expansive unsolved case there and heads south to help. Plenty of red herrings add to this twisty, immersive thriller."

Great book, well written, per the usual.... but *so* short. More like a Novella. I could have read this one in my free time vs using up my monthly free credit for a book I only got to listen to for a few days. So, really disappointed at that. Because it was so short, the story was not very in-depth and as detailed as her stories usually are. The story was great, had the potential to be more than what it was though. Hoping her next novel is longer then 9 hrs, or, at least is not categorize is as a "Novel", which is very misleading. But, absolutely love her writing!

A great, but short, book
