Publisher's summary

MACKENNA - I have everything I need to live out my dream of being a reclusive songwriter - my guitar, my notebook, and blissful silence.

At least, I did until Jimmy moved in next door.

He's got bad news written all over him. And last time I got with a bad boy, it ended with me pointing a gun and pulling the trigger.

Talk about going out with a bang.

Jimmy makes me want things I shouldn't want, which means I have two options: avoid him or piss him off. But no matter what I do he isn't fazed, and I'm quickly realizing there's more to Jimmy than I originally thought.

JIMMY - Over the past year, I've been called a lot of things. Slacker. Troublemaker. Party animal.

I thought I was on top of the world. Turns out, I was pretty close to rock bottom.

Now I have a new title: college dropout.

But I've got a chance to redeem myself - one summer of squeaky-clean behavior at Grandma Beverly's. Two months to prove I'm not a complete f--k-up.

And four rules to follow with the gorgeous girl next door. Rules aren't exactly my forte, but I only plan on breaking one of them.

I want to get back to being one of the good guys.

Contains mature themes.

great other than the male narrator

the storyline was great, nothing heart-wrenching but feel good nonetheless. my only complaint is the male narrator. his voice for Jimmy was fine, but everyone else was awful! he had Mack sounding like a blonde bimbo, Colt, and Travis sound like they were 40 years old... it drove me nuts the entire time. took away some of my enjoyment. 😒

Great story, great McKenna, terrible Male lead

I love Jimmy and McKenna. Love their story. They’re people I just want to wrap in big old hugs and bake them cookies… if I could bake.

Ms. Schlosser’s writing flows well. Her characters are full of life and engaging.

Now the narration. The voice of McKenna worked for me. She was believable and also pulled off all the other voices.

Jimmy’s voice was good as Jimmy… but awful for pretty much everyone else. (He managed to make Travis sound downright elderly… he’s supposed to be in his early 20’s) his McKenna voice was cringey. He’d be better off focusing on inflection rather than timber and trying to sound various shades of masculine and feminine.

ROUGH BEGINNING BUT A SLOW TURN TO LOVE

There’s some domestic abuse/violence at the beginning, but the heroine takes care of it. The rest is light and sweet. The coming together of two people that may seem unlikely to fall in love, but they do. And they get their HEA!

Great story!

I really enjoyed this one! It pulled me in from beginning to end and I loved that Jimmy knew he had made mistakes and was ready, willing and working at fixing them. He got a little carried away after he got dumped his first year at college and by the time he got his head back on straight and stopped partying and drinking so much and going to class, it was too late to bring his grades up and he failed. He is headed to his Grandma's for the summer to help her out and earn back some trust. He is happy to go to his Grandma's and ready to do so. Grandma Bev is a firecracker and she set the situation up since she knew her grandson could help/be good for her new next door neighbor. I really enjoyed both Mack and Jimmy. Mack has been through some really rough times and she has become a loner and shut herself off from most social interactions because of it. I loved watching Jimmy try and pull her out of her shell and get her to interact with him. Once they start clearing the air some, it helps and gives them a place to actually start getting to know each other. This story was sweet and adorable and I loved watching Jimmy show Mack the good side of relationship things and that he didn't hide the fact that he wanted more and wouldn't really do the friends with benefits thing. This story was easy to read and easy to engage with. I really liked it and am excited to see what comes next in the series.
The narrators were good with the main characters they were voicing (man as Jimmy and female as Mack) but, for me, not as great with their voices for the other secondary characters. Still not a problem to listen to it just didn't seem to fit their personalities as well and made them sound different than they actually came across as in the story.
