Publisher's summary

Gwen's never wanted to be a leader, but when no one else stepped up, she took on the role. As the mayor of post-apocalyptic Shreveport, she's made decisions to protect her people...and most of them have backfired disastrously.

When she discovers the dangerous gold dragon lurking outside of the fort has decided she's his mate, heartsick Gwen thinks the best thing she can do is confront him and take him far away from the city.

She does this to save her people - her sister, her friends, her fort. She doesn't expect to understand the dragon. She certainly doesn't expect to fall in love.

Contains mature themes.

Great book except...

Gwen is annoying. I don't dislike her as a person, but her constant "wo is me" inner dialog is boring. And there's a lot of her inner dialog. This book could easily have been three hours shorter and been much better for it. I found myself skipping her POV through most of the book and not missing any of the plot. I liked Vaan's POV. He grows a lot throughout the story and he's very likeable IMO. You learn more about other characters and the story line makes this worth the listen. I love Ruby Dixon's books even though the women sometimes leave a lot to be desired. The narrators did an excellent job. I found that increasing the speed to 1.30x made the pace more natural.

The ending made it worth it

So I really kinda thought that since Gwen was informed she would hook up with her dragon faster and they’d like get onto more plot related shenanigans; but it’s a slow burn because Gwen isn’t ready…which is valid but also drove me nuts after 5 hours.

But the last 2 hours made up for that slow slow burn and the overarching plot came back with a vengeance.

Fire in Spirit (bws) Vaughn/Gwen

Seems Claudia has been pregnant forever? Maybe once red dragon is sane she wt share info a bout Draconian births?
Agar is defy a villain but all things considered don’t understand Gwen attempting to Melina’s release by pointing out Agar’s evil? I know Melina is pseudo Dr and that she saved him after Emma shot him but how did story advance to Agar taking over from militia and Mayor. Are they all under mind control in Ft Dallas? Do Solarians mate same as Draconi?

Vaan + Gwen

As always Noelle and Jeremy did fabulous with the narration! Vaan and Gwen’s story was harder for me to resonate with. I felt Gwen was super whiney and dragging stuff out that wasn’t necessary. But I guess that was part of the development of her character I suppose. But I am going to continue this series because Ruby is amazing

Slow.

This one takes a little while to get anywhere. I normally love Ruby Dixon’s work, but I much prefer the Ice Planet series than the Fireblood Dragons series. With the Fireblood Dragons series there were moments I like, but in general they are a bit long winded. It moves the main story along at the end, but really nothing happens, and the book could have been cut in half without losing anything in the story. Narrator is great though.

Another great dragon romance!

I’ve really enjoyed this series a lot! This is the story of a woman who finds out the dragon that’s been stalking Fort Shreveport thinks she’s his mate. Since she’s acting as the mayor, she feels it’s her responsibility to go to this Drakoni in order to spare the others from injury or death. Their courtship is slow and he’s sweet if clueless. The characters are bright and memorable and I enjoyed the narration as well.
