Gwen's never wanted to be a leader, but when no one else stepped up, she took on the role. As the mayor of post-apocalyptic Shreveport, she's made decisions to protect her people...and most of them have backfired disastrously.

When she discovers the dangerous gold dragon lurking outside of the fort has decided she's his mate, heartsick Gwen thinks the best thing she can do is confront him and take him far away from the city.

She does this to save her people - her sister, her friends, her fort. She doesn't expect to understand the dragon. She certainly doesn't expect to fall in love.

Contains mature themes.

Gwen supervise the fort, but she feels she’s made so many mistakes. Her lowest Moment was when her sister was captured by nomads that she had allowed to come into the fort. Her other error was putting off her dragon and not consummating the mating Bond, as an evil master of the dragons try to take control of her potential mate. When this occurred, she realized her mistake When she was about to lose him. After meeting her dragon, Gwen became more confident. Good story and great narratives.

I enjoyed getting to spend a little time with the diverse women and their mates. I wonder if we can trust the enemy. I will have to see. I want the couples to live happily in the world without more trouble.

The varied couples are great

Gwen is annoying. I don't dislike her as a person, but her constant "wo is me" inner dialog is boring. And there's a lot of her inner dialog. This book could easily have been three hours shorter and been much better for it. I found myself skipping her POV through most of the book and not missing any of the plot. I liked Vaan's POV. He grows a lot throughout the story and he's very likeable IMO. You learn more about other characters and the story line makes this worth the listen. I love Ruby Dixon's books even though the women sometimes leave a lot to be desired. The narrators did an excellent job. I found that increasing the speed to 1.30x made the pace more natural.

Great book except...
