Lord Jasen of Grumhul, an impoverished young nobleman, has come to the Draelands to find a rich husband to help pay his father's debts. To the shock of everyone, he ends up attracting the attention of King Rilvor himself and the dragons who control the magic in the land.

Becoming royalty wasn't something Jasen either expected or wanted, but he can't control his growing feelings for the kind and handsome king. Scheming factions at Court conspire to keep him from Rilvor's side, and now, Jasen has to decide if the chance at true love with Rilvor is worth the burden of being the husband of a king.

Contains mature themes.

truly a pleasant listen. There’s no spicy scenes (which isn’t a bad thing, just something people might like to know before listening), but the romance is very sweet. Lore and world building is good, characters are good, narration is good. The story is very fluffy, if you’re looking for an extremely low stress environment you’ll find it here. In terms of story quality, I would call it ‘a study in stereotypes’ of fantasy romance. Not a whole lot of new ground, but that’s okay. You can just turn your brain off and enjoy a cute lil story. Just all around a good time, definitely recommend.

Just a good time…

I'm a big fan of the fantasy/fairy tale genre; I love stuff by Naomi Novik and Shannon Hale, things that combine adventure and intrigue with romance. In fact I first started dipping into romance novels because I was hoping to find something that satisfied that criteria while also being queer, and I think this book is exactly what I was looking for. It's a fun, sweet story, with enough conflict to keep things interesting but never enough to lean towards angst. There's even a love-at-first-sight feel, just to really play up that fairy tale angle, though the relationship is fleshed out enough not to seem trite.

The performance is definitely very good; Philip Alces has a nice voice, and the characters are varied and distinct enough to make it mostly clear who's speaking. I would listen to something by him again, though I wouldn't be willing to stick out a bad book just for his sake. (yes, there are actually narrators whose voices I enjoy THAT much)

Overall I was absolutely pleased with this book and will probably read it again. My understanding is that it's an expanded novella, but it definitely doesn't feel needlessly padded out. A note for those who are here for the spice: there is nothing explicit in this novel. There's definitely some mature implications and discussion, but nothing on-page. Obviously not something I take issue with but ymmv. Personally I was happy with it, especially since it means I can recommend this one to my niece (who's 16) without guilt. I'll probably be recommending this one to quite a few people, come to that!

a very cute fantasy adventure!

This was a very good surprise. I came upon it surfing the related section. it's included in the membership so I said, let give it a go.

The narrator did a good job. The overall story is packed with a lot of political court drama and at the middle of it all is our MC. The side characters were instrumental for the story and provided comedic and emotional relief when needed.

The fantasy world is well built. And explanations to understand come in conversations or you understand in hindsight situations.

I enjoyed this book. Not one for leaving reviews, but I will do this one.

This is a very good book

Great story but it’s fade to black, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.

Great story

A good book to listen to if you're looking for something easy, and nonstressful. Plot is there, but not so heavy that you might struggle to follow. The romantic moments are cute and the characters are enjoyable.

Very good listen.

This book is well written. I like the storyline. The romance is good and there are decent twists along the way. There is just something about this book that I keep finding myself going back and rereading.

First I will say what this isn't. It's not about shifters, there is no graphic sex and it's isn't boring.
What it is about is love acceptance, jealousy and understanding. About a king who has a connection to dragons to keep peace. Looking for a consort after the death of his wife. A boy who shouldn't be in the running but finds himself the object of desire by the king. It's about overcoming expectations and acceptance for what's in your heart.
I do recommend this book. I would consider it G or PG depending on how open you are. I would also say that it's can be considered YA because it doesn't get graphic with the one sex scene and there are no curse words. Sometimes it's nice just to read a good story without all the adult stuff.

A delightful and heart warming story

I absolutely loved the narration. I thought Philip Alces did a wonderful job with bringing the characters to life. I love the different voices for each character and thought he did a great job at bringing the emotions out at just the right moments.

The story overall was quite enjoyable and I love the world the author created. I did wish there was a little more interaction with the dragons, but that didn’t stop my enjoyment of the story. I was hooked from the very beginning all the way to the end. I found each character entertaining and each with their own personalities.

A sweet story with amazing narration

This is just a comfort read for me - light and easy but not boring. I really liked Jasen and being in his head wasn’t a chore at all. The other characters were interesting as well.

Delightful and fun!
