In the early 20th century, the United States government concocted a plan to import hippopotamuses into the marshlands of Louisiana to be bred and slaughtered as an alternative meat source. This is true.
Other true things about hippos: They are savage, they are fast, and their jaws can snap a man in two. This was a terrible plan.
Contained within this volume is an 1890s America that might have been: a bayou overrun by feral hippos and mercenary hippo wranglers from around the globe. It is the story of Winslow Houndstooth and his crew. It is the story of their fortunes. It is the story of his revenge.

**Spoilers Ahead**
When I first heard of River of Teeth, I was prepared for an interesting and fun take on history; and early on in the book, I eagerly anticipated an amusing Merry Band of Scoundrels cast of characters.
I was NOT prepared for such golden nuggets as a deadly lesbian assassin who just so happens to be heavily pregnant; a brilliant non-binary chemist who is also the central love interest; an unapologetically bisexual Clint Eastwood hero; and our ragtag group casually noticing not a single “white boy” in their group.
If you love westerns, alternative history, or casual queer & POC representation, set yer sights on The River of Teeth!

a hippo is my spirit animal so I had to read this. I was not disappointed.
Fun and Short

The characters were delightful and I found myself devastated at how short the story was going to be until I notice there was a 2nd story! Already on my way to order it.
The audio book narrator was up to the task of all of the dramatic accents. Great listen!
This hippo story chews up the scenery in the most delightful way.

good premise, mediocre writing

Th ragtag band of cutthroats and thieves that our protagonist pulls together are certainly an interesting lot, and it was mildly entertaining to see them interact and plan their “operation” (“it’s not a caper!”). But everything moves so quickly that I could never really connect with them. The action is nonstop, so we never get more than a surface impression of each of them. I feel like this could have been a longer book, with more character development and way less gore! I guess I should be glad it was short, given the copious gory scenes.
The narrator did a good job of various accents, though his British accent was pretty weak. And I think his Cajun French was a bit too Parisian. But otherwise he was entertaining.
Not what I expected - very violent
