About this listen

Mackenzie Corbett always dreamed of living in New York City. Now, almost two years into her job as an associate at a premier Manhattan law firm, she's living her fantasy - big salary, high-profile deals, cute boyfriend, designer bag on her arm. The giant bags under her eyes from lack of sleep don't fit into the fantasy, though. To make matters worse, she's being tormented by a bitter, bitchy senior associate, her boyfriend is annoyed that she never has time for him, and now she's stuck on the deal from hell with a partner whose biggest claim to fame is throwing a stapler at a cleaning lady because she touched his ficus plant.

With the opportunity to secure a prestigious secondment on the line, the overachiever in her is determined to endure whatever it takes to close the biggest deal in the firm's history. But when Mackenzie finds herself the focus of a devastating investigation, her dream job begins spiraling into a nightmare. In this pitch-perfect, frighteningly accurate novel, Lindsay Cameron throws back the curtain to this intriguing world, exposing the truth about life in Biglaw.

This was the perfect beach read - an engaging plot, a protagonist to root for, and a can't put it down feel. Highly recommend,.

Great read for the beach!

The book flowed well. The story line was believable, with the narration and dialogue well balanced. Good work on both the author's and the narrator's part. An interesting insight into the high pressured mechanics of a big law firm through the eyes of an associate. Good balance of humour and relationships intertwined with the main plot.

An easy and enjoyable read.

If you have ever worked for a company that has drained the life out of you, or had a boss that has belittled you… this is a good read.
I found it a refreshing distraction. Plus, it’s free!

Listening to this just raised my anxiety level. I knew what was going on long before she did. I do not enjoy hours and hours of women being harassed, overworked, abused, and belittled by bosses. If that's how corporate law really is, men (and some women) are despicable. I think the author missed a great legal showdown by passing over the wise uncle. A bit predictable at the end.

Very stressful for me

I enjoyed the storyline with a peek into corporate New York lawyers.
I didn't enjoy the narration

Story good!

I really enjoyed this book, as a lawyer who has worked at law firms but never one quite this big. It captures many relatable aspects of associate life. And I felt engaged by the plot. I “read” in about 3 days.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the performance. Any time the actress imitated a partner yelling it reminded me of the episode of Veronica Mars where she imitates the voice of the superintendent about fire drills. If you’re not a Veronica Mars super-fan, this probably won’t bother you. I also thought some of the accents she did were unnecessarily stereotypical and insensitive.

Fun read, especially for lawyers or others fascinated with Big Law

I laughed out loud at multiple spots. The Oompah-Loompah references! OMG- anyone who vas ever worked for a corporation of any kind- doesn’t have to be biglaw- will recognize what it is like. Read it!

Such an excellent book!

Flawed by narrator’s irritating voice and mispronunciations.
Also needs some editing and reshaping . End seems like author got tired.

Overlong

Fun office drama, great for commute audio, junior people’s lives in law and finance are more or less the same.
