Publisher's summary

Just two months before the September 11 terrorist attacks, Dr. Judy Melinek began her training as a New York City forensic pathologist. With her husband and their toddler holding down the home front, Judy threw herself into the fascinating world of death investigation-performing autopsies, investigating death scenes, and counseling grieving relatives. Working Stiff chronicles Judy's two years of training, taking listeners behind the police tape of some of the most harrowing deaths in the Big Apple. Lively, action-packed, and loaded with mordant wit, Working Stiff offers a firsthand account of daily life in one of America's most arduous professions. The body never lies - and through the murders, accidents, and suicides that land on her table, Dr. Melinek lays bare the truth behind the glamorized depictions of autopsy work to reveal the secret story of the real morgue.

Critic reviews

"Far from the magic we see on TV, Working Stiff describes forensic pathology in the real world. The book is a compelling and absorbing read." ---Kathy Reichs, author of the Temperance Brennan 'Bones' series

Inspiring read

I am inspired by the human touch put into the book. A must read for anyone with a passion for the study of the human body and the stories it can tell us.

Terrific story

A great balance of a human story and scientific information described in an accessible way. . I constantly looked forward to when I could listen next. very enjoyable. Narrator had fine,, clear diction, however came across as tedious and robotic -- reminding me of the detached-sounding Laurie Anderson spoken word performance works of the 1980's, but not in a good way.

Fascinating

An excellent, educational, entertaining book. The narrator is mostly good, but accents/male voices aren't great.

Very interesting and well written.

I enjoyed the insiders look into the world of the Medical Examiner. I was moved by her account of 9/11 and the subsequent American airlines crash on Long Island not long after.

Interesting Book, Not for Squeamish

This book satisfied my dual interests in things both medical and related to crime-detection as we follow the progress of the author. She begins her career as a medical examiner in New York city shortly before the 9/11 attacks.

Better a read than a listen?

I really enjoyed the story. I found it interesting and accessible. I had really never read anything about what happened in a medical examiner's office and I found it fascinating. unfortunately I never really warmed up to the reader... I think I would have liked a more mature woman's voice . because I couldn't really ever adjust to the reader's voice I think this book I would have preferred to read.

Great book

Am in the medical profession and this book was captivating; even if not in the medical profession it is a educational accurate great story. The 9/11 events were hard to swallow but so amazing to hear

Interesting to old lab tech

I must be stupid but thought reader did good. Was she supposed to inject steroids to satisfy critics? This book helpful to directors and DONs in Nursing homes who are blamed for hospital screw-ups. Doug Attorney former Corpsman/Lab-tech Army during V Nam
