About this listen

The idealized childhood of this fictional hero, based on Mark Twain's own early life along the banks of the Mississippi, is filled with robust good humor and high-spirited adventures. Yet there is also an in-depth experience of the central South of the 1840s—its dialects, superstitions, and social values. While romping through fun-filled fantasy, Tom Sawyer shows how morally complicated real life can be. In his unabridged reading of the American classic, actor Patrick Fraley crafts 36 authentic "voices" to represent the wide range of Twain's delightful characters.

Great book, great narration! In the beginning, I feared that the somewhat antiquated American language would turn the kids off, but they quickly got used to it, and now both author and narrator have a 55-year-old woman and 12- and 9-year-old boys hanging on their every word. Warning to parents: The N-word is used frequently, but it belongs to the book, and I think adults should explain to the kids that people used that word back then--my kids were a little shocked (especially since we had talked about Don Imus and his racial slurs) until I explained it to them. It's a good opportunity to show how attitudes change, and that people who held such attitudes back then shouldn't be judged according to our 21st-century views. And it's also a good opportunity to show what doesn't change: children's scrapes and silliness, playing hooky, human degradation and human kindness.
I'm writing this before we've gotten to the part where the boys go downriver with Jim--I can hardly wait to see how the boys react to that, but I wanted to take this opportunity to go ahead and praise this audiobook.

A Classic

We listened to this book on a long cross country car trip and enjoyed it very much. Our eleven year old son liked it best of all and was ready to listen to more! Having read the book as a teenager and seen countless TV adaptations, I can say that the audio version really does the best job of bringing the story to life and spurring your imagination.

Excellent Family Entertainment

Having never read a Mark Twain book I must admit to starting out a little skeptical. It didn't take long to realize how enjoyable the book was going to be. The narration was wonderful. The story was interesting, fun and funny. All-in-all just good entertainment.

This is a wonderful book! The reader is very old timey sounding and takes some getting used to but otherwise he’s a great reader. The book is wonderful, funny, adventurous, and exiting! I’d recommend to all ages!

Fraley did an excellent job imitating all the voices and inflections of the characters, they came alive.

It’s a great story, and well read. I know it’s not very PC but Twain was clearly showing you how people thought and spoke at the time - that part of it was more reporting than writing. Enjoy the story.

It’s Mark Twain, but what else can you rate it?
