Publisher's summary

One of the most beloved novels of our time, Watership Down is an epic journey, a stirring tale of adventure, courage, and survival.

Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits.

As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos. Fiver’s vision finally leads them to Watership Down, an upland meadow. But here they face their most difficult challenges of all.

A stirring epic of courage and survival against the odds, Watership Down has become a beloved classic for all ages. Both an exciting adventure story and an involving allegory about freedom, ethics, and human nature, it has delighted generations with its unique and charming world, winning many awards and being adapted to film, television, and theater.

Featured Article: The top 100 fantasy listens of all time

When compiling our list of the best fantasy listening out there, we immediately came up against the age-old question: Is this fantasy or science fiction? The distinction is not as clear as you may think. Dragons, elves, and wizards are definitely fantasy, but what about wizards that also fly space ships? (Looking at you, Star Wars.) For the sake of fantasy purity, the top 100 fantasy listens include the best audio works in all manner of fantasy subgenres.

Editor's Pick

A classic in full form with colorful narration
"Watership Down is about a community of rabbits, but it’s far from kid-like. There are warring factions, oppression, and some terrifying moments in the woods. Recently re-recorded by Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi, this edition is powerful and poignant. Capaldi has a storybook English accent that I found completely immersive, and he develops distinct voices for the many characters."

Best Watership Down Adaptation to Date

This audio adaptation of Watership Down is by far the finest adaptation of any kind to date for this book. Peter Capaldi does an excellent job narrating the story, as well as creating individual voices and personalities for each character. He brings out the perfect level of emotion and drama in each scene. I highly recommend this audio book for fans of Richard Adams's novel, and for those looking for a great adventure story.

WONDERFUL

The most FABULOUS, lyrical, narrator/vocal artist delivering an unforgettable epic—the War and Peace of English rabbits—with memorable cast of heroes & foot soldiers, visionaries, prophets, rabbit fables & lore, and pastoral descriptions worthy of Vaughan Williams. This book that my dad read to us on vacations has lost none of its magic.

Really enjoyed this book

I listened to this book again and again. That’s how good it is. Since this book is not my most favoritest book ever, I gave it 4 stars. It is well worth the listen. I really like the narrator. He is very good at narrating.

Fantastic narration of a fantastic story.

Peter Capaldi does a great job of bringing Watership Down alive. I'm glad I chose the unabridged version. Richard Adams kids must have certainly enjoyed their rides in the car! Cheers 🥃

Excellent tale of a rabbit society

I really enjoyed this book; the characters were thoughtful and well developed, and the story flowed and grew well. Also, great narration. Although there were a lot of made up words in the rabbit language it was clear what they meant. Would recommend.

intense story, well read.

the narrator does a good job giving different voices to the characters, reads well. the story is intense and draws you in, quite enjoyable for those old enough to understand and to handle the many dark scenes and themes. Not a story for young children, but perhaps enthralling for 10+ kids. A fun ride, and a very good ending (spoiler).
