Tor Leonne - the heart of the Dominion of Annagar, where the games of state are about to become a matter of life and death - and where those who seek to seize the crown will be forced to league with a treacherously cunning ally....

Tor Leonne, ancestral seat of power, where Serra Diora Maria di'Marano - the most sought-after beauty in the land, a woman betrayed by all she holds dear - may strike the first blow to change the future of the Dominion and Empire alike....

Averalaan Aramarelas - that most ancient of civilized cities, the home of the Essalieyan Imperial court - has long been a center of magics both dark and bright. And though the Empire won its last war with the Dominion, and survived a devastating, magic-fueled battle with a far deadlier foe, both those victories were not without their cost....

But now, the realm is on the brink of a far greater confrontation, faced with an unholy alliance that could spell the end of freedom for all mortal-kind.

Set in a well crafted world as imaginative as the song of ice and fire—if not more so. Some times the, good and horible ,actions of great people are driven by things unseen.

Epic on a grand and emotional scale

Start with The House War series to follow the story line. Suggest reading the first three books of that series then start this one so you can follow the story line and the events leading up to this book. I love the series

I remember reading this books years ago when I was in college…it’s does have a slow start, but it’s is a good book. The docility of some of these women and the ways of the harem are kind of annoying as I remembered, but is a good read. But this narrator is awful. Wish they could have gotten a better one. But I am continuing to listen because I have read before and I KNOW the book is good. If I were someone who had never read the book I think I would have given up by now.

Michelle West is an amazingt storyteller who pays great attention to detail and builds a truly convincing world. This series is one of my all time favorites!
I waited years for these to show up on audible.
And the result is almost a tragedy.

Apparently narrated by Commander Troy's mother's older, less talented sister...

This seems to be a continuation of a previous series. Far too many main characters with ridiculously long names and titles, many sounding VERY similar. There is little to no backstory. I think the book could have been 25% shorter without all the repetitive titles/names. Most of the book is people talking to each other, no action. The narrator is pretty robotic. Also, if I had known the plot was centered around a culture of Harems, I would not have bought the book.

This does not read like a stand-alone novel.

This book should never be attempted for the first time via audio. The author introduces too many people and too much social complexity to make listening to the painfully incremental plot enjoyable. This is one of those talented Authors who needs an editor who understands the cost-benefit of a story.

At some juncture, only a woman can appreciate the endless navel gazing of female angst within an emotional, plodding fantasy. The exaggerated male and female Adonis attractions are unnecessary and irritating.

It is a shame to see this writer’s skill squandered on such superficial artifice. Occasionally, the narrators voice is incongruent with the proceeding atmospherics, such as, “he quietly murmured.”

Plodding, Tedious, and Female
