Publisher's summary

A golden age doesn't last forever....

Owen Deathstalker sacrificed everything to topple a corrupt empire and usher humanity into an age of peace and prosperity. Now, Lewis Deathstalker, Owen's descendant, carries on the family name and honor as a Paragon, warriors famed for their skill and heroism who dispense the king's justice throughout the galaxy.

However, 200 years have passed since Owen and his gang of heroes disappeared into legend, and the peace that the Deathstalker bought with his life is quickly coming to an end. Amidst political uncertainty, Lewis's oldest friend, Douglas, ascends the throne and names Lewis to the archaic, and largely symbolic, role of King's Champion. But Lewis quickly finds that he has all the bad luck of his famous ancestor and that his old allies have become his enemies.

Surrounded on all sides by plots and treason with the political situation spiraling out of control, Lewis is exiled from court in disgrace. Now, it's the new Deathstalker's turn to save the empire with only a ragged band of allies as chaos spreads throughout the empire and threatens to end the golden age.

I cannot do it

This book just rambles on and on and on and on. The dialog is terrible. Santa is terrible, the knights are terrible, and the queen is terrible. I feel like I was tricked when buying this book. I can generally make it through a bad book, but this one made me feel like I was in a diner, with two old gossiping women who just ramble on and on, changing subjects and stories to whatever comes to their mind.

Good writing, terrible storytelling

The book is interesting, but has no real substance. It often becomes a caricature. Every character is the most charming, most charismatic, most fabulous person to come along, until the next character is introduced. It's like the author handle the general concept but no idea how to make it work so it defaults to old tropes constantly. World building is virtually non existent and there's no foundation for any of the characters actions to make sense at all.

Drains you of the will to live...

As always, Simon R. Green is a good writer. His prose is solid.

But I just can't get through this book. It bounces all over the place. And the blatant inclusion of the King Arthur/Gwenivere/Lancelot rip-off was annoying. The doomed triad. And you feel all of that doom and betrayal and the accompanying pain. Maybe there is a payoff to go with that pain. I don't know. I didn't make it that far.

If Audible would let me return this book, I would. I've been a member for 13 years. This is the third book I've ever wanted to return.

Space Soap Opera

The original Deathstalker series was really good. It had well development of characters, despite Owen calling himself "Deathstalker" every other monologue. Multiple settings for missions and battles, plus seeing both sides of the conflicts. This is just a midday TV soap opera with backstabbing, double crossing, infidelity and not much action. Also they reference the original THREE books so much and it seems like its filler for the story. I hope the rest of the series picks up. Overall I was disappointed, but optimistic for a bigger conclusion.
