“Terrific. A wild ride….I loved it. It hooked me and I couldn’t put it down.”
—Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy

""Brom is that rare breed: a person who is skilled in more than one area of artistic expression. Here's hoping that he will continue to share his dark and often beautiful dreams with us for many years to come."" --Christopher Paolini, New York Times bestselling author of Eragon

Acclaimed author and artist Brom raised eyebrows and pulse rates with The Child Thief, his grim, brilliantly audacious, gorgeously illustrated reimagining of the Peter Pan legend. So what does this innovative fantasist do for an encore? He tinkers darkly with the beloved mythology of Santa Claus.

Set in Appalachia, Krampus the Yule Lord is a twisted fairytale about a failed West Virginia songwriter who gets ensnared on Christmas Eve in an eternal war between a not-so-saintly Saint Nick and his dark enemy Krampus, aka Black Peter, an ancient trickster demon. Krampus the Yule Lord is Gregory Maguire (Wicked) meets Susanna Clarke (Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell) in the realm of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, as Clive Barker (Mr. B. Gone) works his dark sorcery from the shadows. Once again featuring Brom’s chillingly beautiful artwork throughout, Krampus the Yule Lord is a feast of wonder straight from the kitchen of Sweeney Todd.

This is my first Brom book and I have always been like the Krampus Legend. I would recommend this book to anyone. This book had me since the start.

this was a great story that plays off the krampus instead of a traditional Christmas story. the narrator has a soothing voice. the story never really gets stale. the hardest part to understand during the story in regards to the history is explained in the afterthought portion of the book.

if you want something different, as I often do, I'm sure you'll appreciate this book as much as I do.

I loved this story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this holiday read! While definitely darker than my last two Christmas-themed reads, I think that this one is my favorite of the month so far! As the afterword confirms, Brom really investigated the histories of the myths of both the titular Krampus as well as Santa Claus for this novel. And he ties everything together in a very fresh way - with just hints at other aspects to the myths and more overt depictions in other angles. I like tying everything here together with Norse mythology - there is just not enough Norse mythology in fiction!!

Other things are included here, too - like weaving the Dutch Christmas traditions (Santa's residence in Spain and even the varying number of the Belsnickels). I really loved the Belsnickels and their relationship - almost vampirelike - to Krampus here. And then to put so much of the action in Boone County in the Appalachian Mountains was just really terrific. All of these elements and more combined to make a truly wonderful read!

I have both the Audible and Kindle version. The Kindle includes pictures, which is exciting, but the Audible version by far won out for me due to the impressive performance of the narrator. His range really made me prefer to just listen -despite my curiosity over the pictures that I was missing. The plot is certainly exciting and action-packed, but more than that, it was the terrific characters that made this so much fun. I was utterly charmed by the "great and terrible" Yule Lord and Jesse's character was just great, too! I am really excited that I already own Brom's rendition of Peter Pan and am really excited to check out more audiobooks by this narrator! Even though this was over sixteen hours long, I just didn't want it to end!!

Wonderful!!

this is by far the best audio book I have ever listen to. I read this book in hardcover last year so was excited to revisit the story again through audible. I would recommend this story to anyone who likes a great deep rich story with a dark humor wrapped inside.

the yule Lord is coming
