“[A] monumental reimagining of the Arthurian legends...” ( The New York Times Book Review)

One of my favorites, done so well in audio!

The Mists of Avalon is one of my all time favorite books, and I was so nervous to listen to it performed as an audio book, in case it didn't live up to the experience of reading it in print and diving in to that other world. But really it was so well done, whew!

Others have recapped the book so I'm just going to focus on how beautifully told this story is of the women in the King Arthur legend. Viviane, Igraine, Morgaine, all of them smart and powerful and capable, making the hard choices and following their own paths with so much strength. The characters are so real. It's rare to read real, fleshed-out female characters in a fantasy novel and this tale completely revolves around so many of them. It's 60 hours of story telling but I never wanted it to end.

Davina Porter was a great narrator for this. I don't know what happened to her in the Outlander series where she made the main character sound like a super old woman, but in this narration she puts depth and soul into the characters and matches the tone and atmosphere of the book very well.

Fantastic all around.

What made the experience of listening to The Mists of Avalon the most enjoyable?

Davina Porter is a wonderful narrator who does an excellent job bringing the story to life. The book is wonderfully long so it will keep you occupied for a long time and the story is fantastic, one of my favorites.

What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She gives each person a different voice, it's great.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes except it's 50 hours long!

Fantastic audiobook, great story, great narrator, I can't recommend highly enough. I've listened to it numerous times and it's better each time.

A retelling of the Arthurian legend

Both a woman’s perspective on the Arthurian legend and a telling from the Druidic perspective. I had read this a number of years ago but found the audiobook experience entirely fresh. I had little recollection of many details. It odd an always entertaining story.

Classic

This book was so good. It speaks so much truth and paints a clear picture of the transformation of spirituality and the history of goddess religion. Truly a must read.

Great listening experience

I loved reading the book. But listening to it gave it life. I can truly say that this book was a better listen than read.

As good as always

I love this story. I read it once a long time ago, and I've listened to it again now. The narrator speaks slowly and takes long pauses between sentences, so I sped it up some. It didn't change the voice, but still took me 7 solid days of almost non-stop listening to finish it. If I hadn't, and was only getting to listen to it in the car, it would take a month to finish. The story is good, though, and I never got tired of it.

Returning to the Goddess

I loved how each of the women's perspectives was a different aspect of the goddess, to a different degree. Each one was doing her best to live her life as she felt was most useful or right, whether or not the rest of the world viewed it as good or not. The love was tragic, the magic was powerful, and the characters were very human. A great re-telling of such a legendary time.

Still one of my all-time favorites

I have read The Mists of Avalon multiple times over the years. It remains one of my all-time favorite books. The audio version did not let me down. Davina Porter's narration is superb.

Beautiful Saga

This story is simply awe inspiring! I have read it many times in the past, and have very much enjoyed the audible version.

please read this epic tome. stories like this shouldn't fade into the mists of time in the way that Avalon has.
