Anna Strong is trained for anything - until she's attacked one night, only to awaken in a dark world that exists between the living and the dead. Here, Anna struggles with her love for the two men who inhabit the realms of each: Max, a human DEA agent, and Avery, a Night Watcher who joins Anna in pursuit of the vampire who changed her life. Now, as her two worlds collide, fate plunges Anna into the ultimate battle between good and evil - where survival is not just for the living.

Critic reviews

"Pearlman uses subtly different voices for Avery, Anna, and Anna’s partner, David, whose kidnapping propels Anna into a dangerous cat-and-mouse game. While Anna’s wry humor could be more strongly expressed, Pearlman’s delivery of the book’s suspense keeps listeners engaged. Pearlman’s even handling of dialogue, description, and Anna’s internal musings make for a fast-paced paranormal adventure." (AudioFile)

I differ from other reviewers. I think the narrator is fine for a 30 year old women. She does a good job.

Great start for a promising series.

This is a average Vampire story. I enjoyed the book but got uninterested in parts. Think i was spoiled reading the True Blood books first.

A nice story

After reading the two reviews, I decided to go by the number of stars the Anna Strong audio books had received instead. I'm glad I did. I did not find the narrator annoying at all. Yes, there are others I have liked better, but I really enjoyed this start to the series. In fact I have gone on to purchase the others.

I didn't use to read/listen to any of the vampire/paranormal type books until I stumbled on Kim Harrison's "Rachel Morgan" series. Since then I have dipped into other authors that have been outstanding as well (Jim Butcher, Carrie Vaughn, Charlaine Harris, Jeaniene Frost, Kelley Armstrong, Richelle Mead, Deborah Harkness, and others). I would include Jeanne C. Stein's writing along with my other favorite paranormal authors listed above. I found the books very entertaining and well written, and well narrated. If you don't want to stretch your imagination or you don't enjoy this type of book, don't get it. If you like the unusual and a bit of escapism, this series should not be overlooked.

Another new take on vampires and the paranormal.

Great Book

This is a fun book that caught my attention right away. I like the heroine and her devotion to her friends. The plot is strong and the story had a lot of action. Some of Anna's internal dialogue was a little grating and simplistic. The story would have been just as good without it. I like the mysterious voice that lends a hand and never reveals himself. It makes me look forward to the next book. I have to admit to being completely duped as to who the villian turned out to be and that doesn't happen to me very often. I have already purchased the next book.

Entertaining!

It was a bit like a teen novel and very predictable. It was ok, but mindless.

Not interesting enough

What other book might you compare The Becoming to and why?

Bone shop, because I ffel that both books are good but need something to make them more interesting

No idea

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I purchased this as it was on sale. Was not sure I would like it. I was very pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it so much that I stayed up all night to find out more. I was intriguing. Had me interested. Completely held my attention and kept me wanting more. I have now purchased the next book in the series. Really enjoyed the book and audio. Thank you.
