When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern - no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.
Marsh meant to turn down York’s offer. It was too full of secrets that spelled danger. But the promise of both gold and a grand new boat that could make history crushed his resolve - coupled with the terrible force of York’s mesmerizing gaze. Not until the maiden voyage of his new sidewheeler Fevre Dream would Marsh realize he had joined a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than his most fantastic nightmare...and mankind’s most impossible dream. Here is the spellbinding tale of a vampire’s quest to unite his race with humanity, of a garrulous riverman’s dream of immortality, and of the undying legends of the steamboat era and a majestic, ancient river.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Any one who enjoys an old theme with a new and unexpected twist will enjoy this book 10 times over. For there are at least as many twists as that, with charactors you'll love to hate, hate to love, and some that are truly revolting. What did you like best about this story?
One thing I can promise you is that you will NEVER forget this book or it's charactors.Have you listened to any of Ron Donachie’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
As a narrator, Ron Donachie, ranks among one of the best I have listened to. He brings you through this awesome story feeling as if you could reach out and touch not only the charactors but the world in which they live.I DARE YOU TO READ THIS!!!

What did you love best about Fevre Dream?
The time-period detailsAny additional comments?
I didn't find that most of the characters were developed enough but the scenery details and set-building was terrific. This is really more of a story that happens to have vampires in it -- and uses them to bring home various symbolic and subtle perspectives on ethical questions (both universal and current to the period), versus your typical vampire story.Having already read almost everything 'vampire' on the market -- I rather liked this book a lot. It has a lot more 'class' than gore, unlike much of the genre. It could've benefited from some editing and is a few hours longer than justified, and I found a lot of the occurrences were inserted into the story too easily. Still, the narrator was fantastic and the book was hard to put down once into it. GRRM doesn't disappoint with his ability to create a scene, tension, and make you feel as though you are right there in the middle of it.

My wildest expectations were shattered. Fevre Dream, despite the corny-seeming title, is far and away the best "vampire" story I have ever heard. Martin avoids all the clichés and puts an unabashedly original spin on a well-worn genre, as only the creator of an epic such as Game of Thrones could.
As with his more well-known works, Martin immerses you in a world that is at once fantastical and familiar. He paints vivid scenes that immerse you in the steamboating world of the Mississippi in the 1850s. He sculpts incredibly endearing characters that not only seem as human as you or I, but shine brilliantly in their own unique ways as they face and either conquer or succumb to incredible challenges, and their humanity is made all the more real by Ron Donachie's skilled voice acting. Martin's characters have passionate beliefs, and frequently end up in verbal sparring matches through which Martin pits one philosophy against another in a style reminiscent of Socrates's dialogues. Through his characters, we are forced to consider powerful social commentary that's relevant even today. And all the while, you are spirited away from page to page (so to speak) without a break from the suspense.
All in all, Fevre Dream is a powerful, incredibly entertaining and self-contained novel. A nice reprieve from the unfinished epic for which most of us know him.
Incredible.

Story and characters were quite interesting too. Certainly a different take on a genre we've become more familiar with in recent years.
