What the Critics Say

"[T]he story of a reluctant rebel fighting back in a computer-run world in which people voluntarily submit to death at the age of 21 is a fascinating adventure. Narrator Oliver Wyman's excellent vocal performance guides listeners into this harsh world where children rule. He does a credible job imitating children's and women's voices. When he speaks as Jenny, Logan's running mate, one can clearly see the character in one’s mind. The book differs from the popular film of the same name—and has a far superior ending." (AudioFile)

    "A Different Logan's Run"

Throughout the years since its release in 1976, I???ve watched the movie more times than I can remember and is a favorite of mine but have never read the book, so the audio book intrigued me. What I found is this is a very different Logan???s Run; but still entertaining. The basic premise is the same; people must die at a certain age and Logan has reached that age and decides to run.
Written in 1967 Logan???s Run is set in a future world of 2116. The population has reached ???critical mass??? and a law has been passed dictating all people must report to ???Sleep Centers??? at the age of 21, If anyone refuses to report, a Deep Sleep Operative, (also called a Sandman) is assigned to hunt the runner down and terminate their existence. Logan is a Sandman who has reached his twenty first birthday and while on an assignment discovers there might be another alternative to the Sleep Centers called ???Sanctuary.???
It took me a little time getting used to the narrator, Oliver Wyman, because I was used to Michael York???s English accent as Logan in the movie, but after adjusting I thought he did a good job. I would recommend this audio book for those, like me, who have known the story from the movie and everyone else as well.

"If you liked the movie, you'll like this series"

This is book 1 of 3, which I'm reviewing as a set. I enjoyed the movie (and somewhat, the TV series), so I was drawn to the audiobook. I wouldn't consider Logan's run good writing, at all, but I found it entertaining, none-the-less. The characters are extremely shallow, the plot contrived, and there are serious flaws in the whole concept. Still, if you have good feelings about the movie, you'll find this series tolerable.

The first book in the series is the movie (with some differences). The second two books in the series continue the story. Book two is essentially a "return of Logan" that quickly breaks down into a haphazard search for his lost wife ending in a somewhat disappointing battle royal. Book three is an alternative reality 'cheat' to put a different twist on the first book.

The performance is not good. The reader talks very slow which tends to sap the energy out of the story. However, I found that my iPod allows me to increase the speed (x2) which made it very comfortable with minimal distortion in only a few spots. I would totally recommend you do the same. I find it hard to beleive that the producers couldn't do this for us!

All-in-all, if you are listening to the series for the sake of nostalgia, then you'll probably have a good time.

i have an extensive library this ranks up there with any feature i own.

What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?

changing pitch to be both male and female.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

"The movie was better than the book"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The book, while good Sci Fi, did not capture the essence of exploring a concept [artificially limited life span] as well as the movie. 30 somehow seems to be much more meaningful than kids just getting out of their teens.

Most significantly was the domed city in the movie with the futuristic setting. This added much more contrast to the society that had developed within the dome especially when viewed against a long lost Washington DC.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The movie had the better ending and was more uplifting and positive.

Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favorite?

Logan is the story and Wyman did a good job portraying him. Some of the other characters were less well defined.

Could you see Logan's Run being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I am surprized the 'remake' of the movie has not happened yet. The 'Logan's Run' movie from years ago is a classic Sci Fi favorite of mine and it was well cast.

Like the 'Time Machine' and 'War of the Worlds', the remakes always seeem to fall short and 'Logan's Run' if re-made would have to be very good to match the original. I guess I am one of those who puts story and characters above high budget special effects.

    Any additional comments?

I plan to eventually listen to the follow-on books for Logan, although I must admit this has moved further down my list of books having listened to Logan's Run. It is still a good story, just not as good as I was expecting.

"Not at all like the movie."
What did you like about this audiobook?

I enjoyed the book, not at all like the movie. The Narrator did a decent job. I did listen to this in one sitting while driving and it held my interest throughout the book.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

I like book to movie comparisons

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

The book was a little less descriptive than I would have thought, seeing the movie helped a bit with the descriptions of places.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

The narrator did a good job

"Admittedly A Classic, But Not For Me"

Having always heard of this story, but never having read the book or seen the movie based off of it, I took advantage of it's newly available status on Audible to bring myself up to date with the rest of the world.

The first issue that arose was that I had trouble picturing the places and situations the characters were in. The descriptions weren't clear, and I just couldn't visualize the story most of the time.

As the story went on, the subject matter become an issue; especially when it came to the place where the main characters run into strange gypsies (who spoke in such a bizarre way I had no idea what they were saying) that kidnapped them, poisoned one, and then forced the other into unwanted group relations in order to get the antidote for the other - and then progressed into forcing one to mutilate the other with a knife. Not for me.

Through the whole story I felt like I was missing some sort of reference guide I was supposed to have, or that I'd jumped into a series part way through; it was hard to follow, and unenjoyable.

I'm not trying to be precious, but this is written in very poor English & has poor continuity. It is not often I can say I preferred the movie, but it's true in this case. The book is a great disappointment.

    "A different Logan's Run"
What did you like best about Logan's Run? What did you like least?

This would be a good book to read, I think. The narration was done poorly. Mr. Wyman did a great job voicing the different characters. When it came to the narrative, however, he couldn't have been any more boring. Slow, sleepy, monotone. Even the action parts had no emotion whatsoever!

Would you be willing to try another one of Oliver Wyman’s performances?

    No
