Publisher's summary

An in-depth investigation into Donald Trump’s business - and how he used America’s top job to service it.

White House, Inc. is a newsmaking exposé that details President Trump’s efforts to make money off of politics, taking us inside his exclusive clubs, luxury hotels, overseas partnerships, commercial properties, and personal mansions. Alexander tracks hundreds of millions of dollars flowing freely between big businesses and President Trump. He explains, in plain language, how Trump tried to translate power into profit, from the 2016 campaign to the ramp-up to the 2020 campaign.

Just because you turn the presidency into a business doesn’t necessarily mean you turn it into a good business. After Trump won the White House, profits plunged at certain properties, like the Doral golf resort in Miami. But the presidency also opened up new opportunities. Trump’s commercial and residential property portfolio morphed into a one-of-a-kind marketplace, through which anyone, anywhere, could pay the president of the United States. Hundreds of customers - including foreign governments, big businesses, and individual investors - obliged.

The president's disregard for norms sparked a trickle-down ethics crisis with no precedent in modern American history. Trump appointed an inner circle of centimillionaires and billionaires - including Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, Wilbur Ross, and Carl Icahn - who came with their own conflict-ridden portfolios. Following the president’s lead, they trampled barriers meant to separate their financial holdings from their government roles.

White House, Inc. is a pause-resisting, hair-raising investigation into Trump and his team, who corrupted the US presidency and managed to avoid accountability. Until now.

Strong investigative reporting.

His next assignment should an investigative book on the corruption at the Ohio State football program. And don’t just assume that every NCAA Division 1 does it.

Amazing Analysis of Trumps Fortunes, Losses and Efforts to Recoup During his Presidency

Heard Dan Alexander explain Trump’s financial history on Fresh Air and was totally amazed at the detail and forthright analysis of Trump’s investments, bankruptcies and tendency to overspend in high risk ventured with extreme expensive tastes with often unattainable returns. Failure to divest going into the White House costs Trump in the long run with a number of property failures particularly golf courses and his DC hotel. He brings in his financial backers into his administration such as Wilbur Ross who misrepresents his income and does not divest his holdings although claiming he did do. The White House provides opportunities to recoup income on his properties such as the over a million dollars charged on his vacation properties to the secret service. Very complicated to track his financial backers and influencers. Well told and a fast listen. Great book.

Facts and more

The best annual report I have ever read or heard:) this is the first book that I have listened with lots of numbers,BUT a well rounded and objective description surrounding the numbers make it easy to digest.
Outstanding job by an author and the team that helped him bring it all together!

Does a decent job of being impartial

As much as this book gets quoted by the media I was afraid it was going to be very one-sided. It kind of is, but only because the author has taken the time to do the math. The great thing about numbers is they are self-evident. This book will teach you that the separation of money and politics should be taken as seriously as a separation of church and state.

Required reading for all Americans

Regardless of political affiliation, White House Inc should be required reading for all Americans. This book follows the hidden money trails driving politicians in today’s White House. Learn about recently exposed tax violations, policies that may affect you, and who really doesn’t deserve to be on Forbes lists. Learn how Trump turned the White House into a business, profited illegally, and still lost money on the presidency. This story needs to be shared until all politicians pay their back taxes and illegal profits from while in office. This is real news and real money coming from us real tax payers.

We will be hearing much more from Dan Alexander

A brilliant debut from a young writer that effectively tackles massive questions. I’ve been following Alexander’s journalistic career for some time and am delighted to see his first book gaining traction. I very much enjoyed the narration as well. Looking forward to re-listening and to future installments from this powerful emerging talent!

Eyeopening

Incredible amount of research. So much corruption. Hard to believe that this man became President of the United States.

deep reporting in plain language

fantastic explanation of the complicated, hazy world of the Trump family's business dealings and the resulting potential conflicts of interests. reads like a typical nonfiction book (lacks a strong narrative story arch), so some will find boring. but if you have a burning desire to understand Trump's business entanglements, I can't think of a better way to learn about this topic than by reading this book.
