For Low to High Intermediate learners

Improve your Spanish and expand your vocabulary with topics that matter.

When it comes to mastering a foreign language, learning around your interests makes all the difference. But finding books designed for language learners can be hard! This book fixes that. For the first time, you’ll learn to improve your Spanish while learning about the main concepts and key figures of Western philosophy.

“I love Olly’s workand you will too!” (Barbara Oakley, PhD, Author of New York Times best seller A Mind for Numbers)

Told through short, manageable chapters in intermediate Spanish, you’ll become confident in the words, phrases, and expressions you need to speak about the topics you care about.

Written in a conversational, easy-to-follow format that makes the concepts easy to understand, Western Philosophy in Simple Spanish explores the main traditions of Western philosophers from Aristotle, to Descartes, and from Kant to Nietzsche.

But that’s not all! Philosophy has many real-life uses, and this book explores the way in which you can implement them in your life while improving your vocabulary, comprehension and fluency in Spanish.

Here’s what you’ll get:

  • Twenty-five chapters written in conversation format, so you can learn about Western philosophy without the struggle of listening to an academic text
  • Helpful chapter summaries at the end of each chapter to help you understand the text
  • Chapters that are carefully written to be accessible for intermediate learners (CEFR B1-B2), so you can learn purposively, at your level

The chapters are written in Castilian Spanish. However, since the text uses mostly “neutral” Spanish, you’ll have plenty to learn, whether you’re learning the Spanish of Mexico, Colombia, or Costa Rica.

Created by Olly Richards, language teacher and author, Western Philosophy in Simple Spanish gives you an experience in real Spanish that you won’t find anywhere else. You’ll be better prepared for using Spanish in the real world, speak with more confidence, and take a giant leap towards fluency in Spanish!

Good book for intermediate Spanish

I'm part way through as I write this, it's obviously a pretty quick and simplistic treatment of the actual philosophy, but that's to be expected for this type of book. It doesn't pretend to be an academic book, even at the popular level. It's basically conversations among beginner philosophy students (with some professor comments thrown in), which works well as Spanish practice.

It might be helpful to already be a little bit familiar with the subject, as I was curious what they would cover with the philosophers I was familiar with, and it might not matter so much that the explanations are a bit lacking, but it certainly can be read without that.

Great resource

I really appreciate this book. I've been finding it hard to find audio-only content at the intermediate level, but this was perfect. Not only was this the right level for me, but it was also on a topic that I find engaging. Both of those together is hard to find but so powerful for language learning.

I personally find non-fiction content more interesting, so having resources like this are so helpful. I will pretty much buy any/every non-fiction Spanish learning book that you release because it is just so helpful for learning.

Great performance, sloppy editing

The language was simple enough to understand and the vocabulary was repeated frequently so I actually ended up learning quite a few new words along the way. The story of the students was engaging and a good way to introduce the ideas. The reader did a terrific job with pacing and clarity, but the editor left in several errors towards the end that took away from an otherwise great listening experience.
