Publisher's summary

Even before he could move, the full realisation of what confronted him blazed in the Pharaoh's mind. This was the foul and loathsome thing that Taita, with his clairvoyant powers, had smelt in the air. The light was strong enough for him to make out every detail of the enemy he had loved as a friend.

The magic of the gods. The treachery of man.

In his long life, Taita has gone from slave to warlock, and now his wisdom and abilities are known throughout the kingdom. But even his immense skills cannot protect those close to him from the evil that lurks at the heart of Egypt: Lord Naja, self-proclaimed Regent until the Prince comes of age.

Taita must summon all of his formidable gifts to protect the true ruler, the young prince Nefer - grandson of Queen Lostris. As enemy forces join together to bring destruction to the whole land, it is no longer a matter of simple magic. To defeat the false Pharaohs, the gods and armies must share their powers with a mortal warlock....

didn't want it it end

This is cohesive, with a strong story line and excellent narration. It worked well as a stand alone novel, which is great because it's been years since I've listened to the previous books.

I absolutely love this book. I have read it over and over for over 15 years! It wasn't until I downloaded it on here did I realize it was part of a series. Now I'm downloading the rest of the series!!

Entertaining

I liked this book but who's bright idea was it not to divide it into chapters it brought me back to the bad old days of books on CD which if you have never had the pleasure sucked Cassette tapes were the best but this one big file is crap almost a deal breaker I'm sure people are not knocking down the door for Wilbur Smith books but still

WOW FANTASTIC

If you haven’t read Wilbur Smith YOU NEED TO! I am so sad because I have now finished all of his series along with all but one of his novels. I’m saving that for an up coming road trip with my husband.
Mr. Smiths writing style is so very extraordinary, vivid, alive, I feel like I am a character in one of his stories his novels are so easy to melt into. I feel as though I can, smell the air, taste the salt of the sea, feel the stinging heat of the desert, touch the minerals and rocks, hike through the jungles, go on Safari, feel the splashing rain, smell the mineral iron smell of blood, ride a horse....I JUST DO NOT KNOW HOW TO EXPRESS HOW FABULOUS THESE NOVELS & SERIES ARE!
***THANK YOU Wilber Smith for sharing your stories with the world, I for one am richer for it.

EXCELLENT!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I did with "River God". A typical Wilbur Smith product. However, the reading done by Mark Meadows made it an extraordinary listen. Congratulations to Mark Meadows and Thank you to Wilbur Smith for an excellent story.

I love this series

This book is fast paced and very hard to turn off at night. I was just up all night finishing it. I just couldn’t stop. I had to know what happens next.

The only things I didn’t like were that so many babies and mothers were killed and it seemed excessively brutal in that regard. (I’m trying not to give anything away here, so being vague. )And the way a female character was killed near the end of the book was horrific and again just went too far. Both of these things were disturbing and very upsetting for me.

Otherwise the whole rest of the book was awesome and as with all his books I really enjoyed it.

I highly recommend it to anyone.

Unbelievable!

I’ve been an avid Wilbur Smith fan since I picked up and read, ‘When the Lion Feeds,’ 45 years ago. Since than I’ve read so many of his books. Two years ago after so long, I started from scratch and started reading his books again. Each book bought back memories of my younger self. Now that I’m older, my drive to work can get long. Listening to the books I read makes the journey so easy each day. I never finished the Egyptian Series. Now I listen to the books. I’m so excited to loose myself in these stories as I eat up the miles each day. What a great series. Wilbur Smith is a master story teller!

Should have stayed with same narrator from 1st boo

I like the book but hate the narrator in this 2nd book of the series. Dick Hill was a much better narrator and more skill with doing the voices and accents of the different characters. Due to me going from River God right to this book it is really throwing me off and making it difficult to get into the book. It’s like they went from a five star narrator to a 1 star.

I’m in complete agony waiting for another credit

Well, Wilbur has ruined me for all other Egyptian literature. I don’t believe that any other series could possibly measure up to the masterpieces in this series. The character development is impressive, and the lessons will stay with me for a lifetime. It’s also lead me to fill out grad school applications to pursue a new path (the path I’ve always wanted to be on since childhood) in anthropology as a forty-year-old woman who currently works in Legal IT.

Thank you for the inspiration!!!!!
