Publisher's summary

Have you found that you can’t read the Bible without being sent back into a painful place? Have the scriptures been twisted to keep you in bondage?

The real Jesus wants to set you free.

In Untwisting Scriptures: Patriarchy and Authority, Book 2, Rebecca Davis addresses the hold that “patriarchal” parents have had over their adult children in the name of “children obey your parents” or “rebellion is the sin like witchcraft".

She also addresses the harm religious leaders have done as they hold “obey your leaders and submit to their authority” over the heads of those they manipulate and control.

A toxic faith needs to be deconstructed and rebuilt on the solid foundation of the true Lord Jesus Christ. Untwisting Scriptures does this by faithfully examining word meaning, context, and the heart of God for his people. This audiobook will untwist and present the beautiful truth of God’s Word, exposing sin where it needs to be revealed, and offering hope to those who desperately need it.

Scriptures can be untwisted. You can walk away from the spiritual abuse of patriarchy and cult-like authority without leaving the real Jesus. In fact, you may just find a God you never knew.

Very needed to address twisted views of authority

I found the narration a little off putting at first but glad I listened to the whole book. I wasn’t as familiar with the patriarchal movement but knew there were families like this out there. I was surprised by how much of this twisted teaching was in my own church I used to be heavily involved in. I had 2 church leaders use the umbrella illustration with me and my ex husband when there was abuse in my home. Somehow my lack of submission was causing the stress leading to his abusive behavior. This church was no isolated cult but a very mainstream conservative church. I did eventually sort these things out with my own study of scripture and through prayer. I did find my way out of the abuse. But it is good to hear others who also see the true Jesus of the Scriptures. Get past the over dramatized narration at first. The message is worth listening to.

My only complaint in this is she puts a wrong emphasis on the NT as if the OT is inferior and less important. While I agree that we are under a better covenant, all Scripture is God breathed and useful for instruction. Most of the NT wasn’t written yet when that statement was made and referred to the OT. It was actually the OT that was most helpful for me to recognize that God made provision for women to leave abusive marriages. So read the whole Bible. Some things are more clear in the OT than the NT. But it is all cohesive.

Another important book for those coming out of the patriarchal movement

If you have been steeped in the patriarchal movement, it is so hard to see Scriptures in their proper light. This series is so helpful. Highly recommend.

Rethinking Scripture

This book opened my eyes to the many errors I had bought into as a young mother and homeschooling mom.
