Alla vigilia della festa di san Giuseppe, negli uffici quasi deserti della polizia arriva una strana telefonata. Giorgio Roccella dice al brigadiere che devono vedere una cosa che ha trovato in casa. L'indomani, quando il carabiniere si reca nel villino per rispondere alla chiamata, lo trova con una pallottola in testa e una vecchia Mauser sulla scrivania.
Suicidio, decreta il questore. Ma Roccella, prima di morire, ha scritto su un foglio: "Ho trovato." Quel punto incongruo è il primo degli indizi che condurranno il brigadiere verso una verità molto diversa.
