Publisher's summary

A catastrophic pandemic ravages the globe, reducing the human population to extinction levels and cleansing the world of mediocrity.

A doomsday prepper, a molecular geneticist, a journal-keeping loner, and a martial arts-trained nerd survive the disease that annihilated almost everyone else on the planet. Despite the miles between Kansas and California, Texas and Arizona, the four share a connection.

They realize that not dying was the easy part.

Now a year later, they navigate a bleak world...one without technology, without modern medicine, and without law and order. They must unify their diverse strengths not only to rebuild civilization but to battle those who would forge empires through brutality and oppression.

"There is one who would rule the world or see it burn."

Fans of Stephen King’s The Stand, Hugh Howey’s Wool series, and Markus Sakey’s Brilliance trilogy will love this novel. Intricately plotted, superbly paced, and brought to life by fully-developed protagonists, quirky supporting characters, and charming villains, the Troop of Shadows Chronicles is a tour de force. It is the unfolding story of the greatest threat humanity has ever faced, and is populated with some of the most entertaining people you’ll ever meet.

a welcome change

I have been reading a lot in this genre lately and this book is a departure from many of the offerings. There is a complex plot with indepth development of varied characters. However the narrator is a particular problem for this book with all it's characters and threads because of her one dimensional delivery. In spite of this I would definitely recommend it.

One of the best

This is one of the best PA novels I have seen. it is well written and fast paced. the characters are realistic and well presented. the plots are written intelligently and with a likely scenarios. The last part has some surprises, which I expect to see more of in the rest of the novels in the series
GREST STUFF !

Really boring narration

This narration may as well have been a robot reading. No inflection, no feeling, sometimes poor mistimed pauses. Alexa would have done better. The reader is Just not a story teller.

Good Story

Enjoyed the story and characters, but the quality of the recording was not great, it sounded like parts were recorded on different systems and then pieced together. It was a little distracting.

Enjoyable

Good dystopian novel. Interesting twists on the theme. Looking forward to book two and how she brings it together.

Good story

Good story. However, the performer needs to learn how to pronounce K-bar (pronounced like it is spelled, say the letter k then add bar).

Attention grabber

The characters in this book are developed well and easy to follow. Not everything adds up the way you would expect. Kept my attention and very entertaining.

outstanding narrator and great story

I'm disappointed that the second book is not available on audible since that's the only way I can enjoy books now. I don't understand why an author would have the first book on audible and not the rest of the books in the series. For anyone losing there eyesight, this is a huge loss.

Well constructed story -- audio quality spotty

I think Nicki Smith is a good storyteller and that is high praise. I enjoyed the first book in this series and will definitely listen to the next. I hope the sound quality is better. The narrator was fine, but at times her voice came in strong and at other times the volume dipped for no apparent reason. Really enjoyed the author's character development coupled with a good plot. And for good measure there is some nice descriptive writing as well. Glad to have found this author.

Terrible Narration

Scarlet Johansson does not need to read this, she makes it hard to discern which character is speaking and also does not use inflection very well. I listened to 2 hours, I will read the rest.
