Publisher's summary

As a mercenary, Galeron Triste jumps at any chance to earn coin and fill his belly, but when his latest job turns into a trap, he's faced with charges of treason. His chance of redemption lies in one option: hunt the former client, a rebel mage, and drop his carcass before the king. A simple task, but this mage pursues the secret of all magic to remake Galeron's homeland in his own twisted vision.

Now, Galeron must track him across the kingdom and keep that power out of his hands, but what chance does a man have against such magic?

Exciting to the end

I listened to this at the recommendation of a friend. Heroic fantasy is not a genre I typically gravitate to, but I found it captivating. Max Irons is very capable writer with believable characters and dialog. He is very adept at battle scenes. The real star here is the narrator who brings the book to life. He is capable of fast-paced dialog with multiple characters & accents without a slip. Good job all around.

Fun Story

I'm familiar with reader Austin Nebbia's work and enjoy his performances. This story has some great characters who are worth following, but at times the hand of the author is felt pushing this story, and too many times the protagonists were miraculously spared from overwhelming strength without accountability. As a light read, this was entertaining on a long drive.
